School Community Enjoys First Liturgy of the Year

Thank you to our 8th grade who hosted the liturgy this week.  Our students did a beautiful job.

Father Andrew was the presiding priest. He welcomed all new students, families and teachers to the Presentation community and blessed the new year. The homily focused on the Holy Spirit. Father reminded the children that the Holy Spirit means that God is always with you. He explained that the school year will be filled with the best days and really hard days but that each day God is with you when you need him.
LUNCH, LUNCH, LUNCH, LUNCH, LUNCH
Order online today for October

Click here to place your October order!  It is too late for this upcoming week but order today for the rest of the month.  There are some minimum days and holidays coming up that were not reflected in the initial menu calendar but be assured that online credits have been issued for those days. Thank you to the Country LunchBox!
Movies of Your Children - Part 2!

As a means of welcoming our 7th grade parents to Back to School Night AND explaining some of what the students will be learning this year, Vickie Carroll enlisted her students to help create a start-of-the-year class video, which can be seen here:

Presentation Welcomes New Student
to 2nd Grade

Periodically, when space is available, Presentation welcomes new families during the school year. This week we are pleased to welcome a new boy to Joanna George's second grade classroom.  Nino Frederickson (in center in pink) lives in Napa. When you see him and his parents Kevin and Denina around campus, please give them a warm Presentation welcome. Welcome Nino!

You can find the family's specific contact information in Beehively and we hope you will reach out to them in the weeks and months ahead.  Our students are always very excited to welcome new faces to their classrooms!
First Grade Celebrates 25th Day of School (1/4 of 100!)

A lot of exciting learning has been taking place in the first grade classroom this year. We are building words, building sums, and building friendships to last a lifetime! We recently recognized the 25th day of school with a scavenger hunt using the cardinal directions as our guide. Our scavenger hunt led to a celebration in the classroom where we watched a movie, had fresh fruit and treats and analyzed the number 25. First graders can't wait for the 50th day!
Cross Country Team Is Out of the Gate Strong!

From Coach Amy Doughtery:
For any of you that went to last year's meet at Schollenberger Park In Petaluma, last week we were up against mother nature again. This time we competed with tornado like winds. However, that didn't stop our kids from hunkering down, lacing up and giving it their all.

Competition was strong from other schools but we held our own. I say this every year, but I am in awe of how these kids can get into a zone come race time and run their hearts out with a smile ear to ear. Our sportsmanship was honorable as I watched our students cheer other schools across the finish line.

This sport is a true test of endurance and a race against one self -- I am very proud of all the students for running strong!

Imagine an Evening in Hawaii
It is all about the kids!  If you haven't already, call  or stop by the office on Monday to buy your ticket before the price goes up on Oct. 1!  These girls want to win this surfboard!

New this year is the GOLDEN PADDLE!  If you participate, you are buying a 1 in 100 chance to win the Golden Paddle, which is worth $5000.  The lucky winner can use this paddle during the live auction event to bid on any item/items of their choice.  The paddle is just as good as gold/cash.

To make life easier, you can even buy a GOLDEN PADDLE ticket (or event ticket) via email. Click here to email your request to Nancy Bei.
Schedule of High School Visits

Wed. Oct. 30 - Justin-Siena High School
Wed. Nov 13 - San Domenico High School
Thurs. Nov 21 - Sonoma Valley High School
Tues. Dec 3 - The Marin School

All 7th and 8th graders attend these information sessions automatically as part of their school day.  Parents in any grade are welcome to join us.

Middle school parents who missed the presentation on "Choosing and High School and a High School Curriculum" can stop by the office for a copy .

Parents who are interested in having their 7th or 8th grader attend a one-day SSAT prep class (the test required by Sonoma Academy, Marin Academy, Branson among others) on our campus on a Saturday in October should email communications@presentationschool.com for details as soon as possible.
Emergency Bags Are Now an Emergency!

It is time for Presentation to bring all of our students' emergency bags to their safe storage spot in our rear shed.  In order to do so, we must have one for every student.  Please drop your child's bag to the office, no later than Monday if you have not yet done so already.  Those families who ordered bags through the 8th grade fundraiser are taken care of, though the bags still need a letter from parents and a photo added, if possible.  See Laura Wallace on Monday if you have questions.
Kinders Celebrate Apple Week and Launch Blog!

Our kinders celebrated Johnny Appleseed day on Thursday. They weighed and measured apples, drew them, wrote about them and then made applesauce.  The class recently launched a blog, written by the kinder students, about what they are doing in class. You can visit the blog here: http://mrsmillerskinders2013.edublogs.org.  The password is the name of our school.
Service Learning Elective Launches Food Drive

The dozen or so students in Joel Kuschner's Middle School Service Learning elective this week are launching a food drive to benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank.  Our students recently learned how much the food bank needs donations in times other than the holidays and so they decided that October was a good month to do a drive. You will see these big bins around campus.  Please bring in non-perishable food items and toiletries.  Hopefully when the drive ends later this month, our students will also get a chance to travel to the food bank to see how the food actually reaches those in need. (Pictured are some of our younger students who are excited about the drive!)
Presentation Students Snag All Leads
in BBK's Wizard of Oz

It is a perhaps testament to their great drama training at school that Presentation students were cast in every major role in Broadway Bound Kids' upcoming performance of The Wizard of Oz!

Presentation graduate Ella Freudenberger will play Dorothy.  7th grader Tessa Freudenberger will play the Wicked Witch of the West, sharing the part with 8th grader Aria Schuler.  7th grader Nell Sheridan was cast as Glinda the Good Witch, 7th grader Hanna Rosa McNeely is playing the Scarecrow and 7th grader Jack Wolff was cast as the Cowardly Lion!

Too many Presentation students to list also have other great roles in the production.  Save the dates of November 14-17 to come see the show at Veteran's Hall.
THE THANK YOU BOX

Thank you to Amy Dougherty (Miss Amy) for the many great photos she submits for this eNews each week!

SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Aftercare: Parents are reminded that the after school program is organized and staffed to provide kids a reliable place to be after school.  The first 45 minutes is organized as a quiet study time, where kids can get a start, or a even a finish, on their homework.  If you would like your child to attend after school care, we need to know in advance, so that we can be prepared and know for whom we are responsible.  Please contact the office to add your child to the aftercare roster.

Cold & Flu Season:  As September comes to an end, we are seeing more kids going home early due to illness.  The Flu season is upon us, and The Presentation School urges you to make sure that your children receive a yearly flu vaccine.  Please talk to your health care provider early to schedule a flu shot.  We also ask that you please do not send students to school who are sick or have a fever.  We will remember to ask our students to wash their hands regularly and not share food or drinks with friends.  The impact of the flu season can be greatly lessened  if we all take care of these things.

Yearbooks:  While we are still early in the school year, now is the time to order your school yearbook if you want to take advantage of a discounted price.  Click here to place your order.

Emergency Cards: Please get your yellow emergency cards in.  Even if nothing has changed we need a new card every year.

Barn or Storage Space?  If you have some extra space in a barn, shed, garage or warehouse, we are looking for a place to store our art display boards, as well as some set pieces for theater.  These boards currently live on the stage and they are preventing us from using the space for drama and music.  Please contact Laura Wallace if you can help us out with storage.

Credit Card Billing:   We urge all of our school families to complete a credit card authorization form and simply check the box, "charge my credit card on file".  Doing so enables all future lunch orders, field trips, event tickets and sports signups to be billed to your card effortlessly. And you will still receive a complete accounting of the charges. Just complete the form and return to the business office. Click here.
