Greetings!

Dear Presentation Families,

Thank you to everyone who attended, and all those who contributed their labor and treasure to the success of Saturday night's party.  A very special Thank You to Toni Veronese and Bridget Paul for chairing the event, and to Nicole Bromstad, Rebecca Henley, Barbara Madden, Erica Clark and Dawn O'Neill for their leadership in the silent and live auctions and the beautiful and transformative decorations.
Aside from being a great community builder, your participation in gatherings like the Imagine event help us move the school forward and give our kids the tools they need to grow and learn.  This year's Fund a Need alone raised over $50,000 for additional technology and professional development!

Thank you to Cristian Isbrandtsen, class of 2012, for the terrific photos of the event, all of which can be seen here: cristianowenisbrandtsen.smugmug.com

I hope you enjoyed the day off today and we look forward to our conferences with you this week.

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

On Thursday, Presentation will take part in the "Great California Shakeout" earthquake readiness drill.  Teachers will explain and practice our earthquake response procedures with their classes.  The school will also test our Urgent Message Announcement System.  THIS IS ONLY A TEST.  A phone, email, and text message will be sent to parents.  This is one reason why we ask that you keep your Beehively accounts current.

On Friday, if you see a fire engine in front of the school, it is a good thing.  At 9:15am, the lower school will participate in a Fire Safety exercise with the local Fire Dept.  Children will learn fire safety lessons from professionals and have a chance to look up close at the fire engine.

PLEASE NOTE: Halloween -- October 31 -- is a minimum day.  If you need after-school care in the afternoon please let Laura Wallace know a week in advance.  After-school care will end at 4:30pm on Halloween.
6th Grade Travels to Buck Institute
Last week our 6th grade class had the opportunity to travel to the Buck Institute to experiment and examine the germs that students collected from various places around the school (the bathroom sinks, the staff room sponge, and the school toilets).  They collected the samples in high-tech petri dishes which were taken by the Buck institute scientist.

After a week we went and met the scientist at the Buck institute and she handed back our samples so we could view them under the Buck's high power microscopes. We saw what types of bacterias and molds had grown from our samples. Needless to say, everyone washed their hands very well after the experiment.

The Buck Institute in Novato is the nation's premier independent research facility focused on understanding the connection between aging and chronic disease. At the Buck Institute, world-class scientists work in a  collaborative environment to understand how normal aging contributes to the development of conditions specifically associated with getting older (such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma).

Many thanks to Denise Kalos for helping organize this trip!
Students Enjoy Field Day

Last Friday was our annual Field Day! Students  participated in outdoor activities that the 8th graders prepared and led.

Our students enjoyed face paint, tug-o-war, water balloon toss, musical chairs, balloon popping relay, 3-legged race/potato sack races, limbo, beach ball volleyball, obstacle course, and various carnival games/bubbles.

The day ended with a kickball game -- 8th grade vs. teachers!  Ask your student who won!

Also last week our students met their "buddy" for the year.  On Field Day, they had lunch with their buddies... always a favorite part of the day!
Cross Country Update from Coach Amy

Presentation School was represented by two 5th graders, Nicholas and Ella and two 6th graders at the third cross country meet of the season.  Ella finished 5th, running a 8:41 for the 1.1 mile course, and only 7 seconds behind the 3rd place finisher.  She improved both on her mile time (to about an 8:20 pace), and her 8th place finish in the previous meet.  Nicholas also ran exceptionally well, at 7:59, less than one minute behind the first place runner.  Great job!

Among the 6th graders, Micki just missed a medal, finishing 4th in the two mile double-loop, hilly course, with a time of 16:33.  Bettina improved on her finish time from our first meet this season, and finished in a terrific 18:33, a terrific pace of about 9 minutes per mile. Congrats to the team for an excellent showing, in what most observers said was the largest turnout of runners for any meet this season so far, intensifying the competition.
Power Of One Assembly

The Power of One™ Assembly last week was a renowned bullying-proofing performance for elementary school children. The Power of One is a series of skits presented by actors who use boxes, colors, and masks to vividly portray what bullying is, what can be done about it, and how every child has the power of one, the power to report and deal with bullying when they see it.

Climbing Team Enjoys Session With Pro Climber
Kevin Jorgeson

Pro Climber Kevin Jorgseon (in green) was in town recently for a special event and he joined our climbing team for a practice session at the bouldering barn.  Our team had a chance to climb alongside Kevin and to hear about his progress on his latest project on El Capitan's Dawn Wall.
Students Busy With Creative Arts Projects

The art room is bursting with creativity as your young artists are learning and exploring all types of art forms. Eighth grade are making ceramic shoe sculptures, seventh grade is finishing their half faces, sixth grade are starting to learn about one point perspective, fifth grade have been working with blending chalk and oil pastels, fourth grade are getting ready for building castles and third are working on toucans with watercolor backgrounds.

Students just had a journal check in for September. Every week, fourth through eighth grades are to spend time working in their journals at home.  Artwork can include but not limited to: drawings, collages, painting, computer art... If your child loves to bake, sew or build amazing lego sculptures... then a picture signed by the parent with date will be accepted and added into their journals.

Meet Our 8th Grade

Our 8th grade has started off the year really stepping up to the challenge of leading the student body and setting a great example for our younger students!

Campus Graced By New Trees

Have you noticed the new trees in our courtyard?  We are eager to maximize our outdoor space and to enjoy outdoor classrooms when weather permits.  Thanks to funds raised last year at the golf tournament, we have new picnic tables where small groups can meet and the new trees will provide much appreciated shade in the hotter months.
The Thank You Box

Thank you to Yalda Teranchi helping Laura Wallace decorate our office for Halloween.  Our students are enjoying the festive decor!

Watch this space next week for a big Imagine thank you!
