Standardized Testing In May: About the Stanford-10
Since 2009, Presentation has administered the Stanford-10 tests to all students Grades 3 - 8. The Stanford-10 is a national standardized test produced by the world's top educational publishing and assessment company, Pearson. Most of the leading public, private and parochial schools across the country use this test.
The results of these assessments are used as a baseline for determining how best to meet the academic needs of each student. Homeroom teachers share cluster scores during October conferences.
Scores on the Stanford-10 are given in percentile rankings. The scores are calibrated so that the national average is the 50th percentile, meaning out of every one hundred students, 50 students scored lower than a student scoring 50.
We do not believe in "teaching to the test," rather that the information gathered from the Stanford-10 and all the other assessments will be useful as we fine-tune our curriculum in the months and years ahead. That said, here are some tips to prepare your students, most of which their teachers have already gone over with them in class:
- The test is untimed so students should take their time, not rush and take the time to look over their answers.
- No question should be left blank as there is no penalty for guessing.
- Students should take the testing seriously and try their best though there is no reason to get nervous. It will be explained to them that the results are mainly used to guide future instruction.
- Please do not schedule any doctor's appointments during the testing week if possible.
- Finally, please help your child out by starting their day off right with a big, healthy breakfast (also send them with a snack); a good night's sleep; and a prompt arrival at school.
Please do not hesitate to ask Mrs. Fischman if you have any questions or concerns.

Students Learn About Internet Safety
To help our students learn to use technology, social networking and the Internet in a safe and responsible manner, Office Steve DeWarns presented to grades 5-8 last Wednesday morning in the library. He did a great job of connecting with the students and hitting the right balance between being empathetic with their desire to be online and clear about the potential perils. We were pleased to have Officer DeWarns back on campus.

Third Grade Enjoys Busy Week
MARKET DAY
Last Friday, the third graders participated in the second Market Day of the year. Market Day is an opportunity for the students to spend classroom cash, which they earn for staying on task, following directions, and being kind to others. Each child brings in homemade wares and the classroom is set up like a market. The children then take turns shopping for unique and creative items. A fun and exciting time was had by all!
MATH MASTERS
Some of the third graders are learning an algorithm for long division. After much practice and mastery of the steps, they were challenged to extend the skill by creating an oversized division problem. Each student had to choose a dividend with at least six digits and had to divide by a one-digit divisor. Some of the students chose dividends in the octillions! Each student had to check the accuracy of his or her work on a calculator, which, in some cases, had to be a special website capable of accommodating greater numbers! The students were very excited about this challenging task and participated enthusiastically.
