Lenten Outreach Projects
Lenten Outreach
Primary Grades:
Our students in grades K, 1 and 2 are earning funds by working around their homes doing chores.  At the end of the year, all the money they have earned will be donated to Heifer International.

Intermediate Grades:
Our students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will be collecting canned food and clean, gently used clothing for F.I.S.H. (Friends in Sonoma Helping) March 18-28.  Donations can be brought to those classrooms.  Parent volunteers are needed to take the collected items and a few students to FISH after school on March 28.

Our Middle School:
Our 6th, 7th and 8th graders enjoyed a great day cleaning up Doran Beach (see story below) on Friday. Fifteen of our students also participated in the 30 Hour Famine (story below).
Happy St. Patrick's Day from The Presentation School!

30 Hour Famine Students Raise Awareness....
and more than $4300

Framine
Wars and natural disasters dominate the world's daily headlines, but behind the scenes and far from the spotlight, hunger and preventable diseases claim the lives of more than 20,000 of the world's children every day. Nearly 1 billion people go hungry every day. More than 6 billion live on the planet. One in six will go hungry tonight.  But world hunger is 100 percent preventable, and 15 middle school students from The Presentation School recently stepped up to help.

Last weekend, they joined the efforts of hundreds of thousands of young people all over the nation who set aside the usual "stuff" that fills their daily lives. Instead, they participated in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine by going without food, and getting a taste of what the world's poorest children and families face every day. Prior to the event weekend, students raised funds with the knowledge that every $30 they raise can help feed and care for a child for a month. Our group raised $4,300, and continues to accept donations until March 22.  This money will feed almost 12 children for an entire year.

As part of the Famine, our students participated in a service scavenger hunt, cleaned Pullen Creek in Santa Rosa, and assumed the identity of a hungry refugee child.

Funds raised by 30 Hour Famine participants help feed and care for children in communities in need around the globe through World Vision. A portion of the funds raised assist families in need in the United States.

Sixth Graders Cook With Executive Chef Doug McFarland
Doug McF
Guest Spanish Teacher Nancy Morales planned an amazing class for the sixth grade students on Thursday.  She arranged for Ramekins Executive Chef Doug MacFarland to lead the children in a cooking class with South American flavor!  The students prepared from scratch traditional El Salvadoran Pupusas and Charred Tomoatillo Guacamole.

It was delicious as well as fun. Thank you so much Maestro Morales, Chef Doug, and Ramekins for providing this authentic experience for our children!

All Students Celebrate Pi Day on 3.14
Pi Day
The entire school gathered in the Activity Center and on the blacktop on 3.14 to celebrate Pi Day!  There were all kinds of activities that the students could choose between (in their buddy pairs). Activities surrounded the idea of Pi, which is a circle, including bobbing for donuts, tracing the perimeter of a cookie and making the Pi equation 3.14 using only their bodies.
New Middle School Electives Begin This Week
Science elective
Every trimester, the elective options for our sixth, seventh and eighth graders change and each student indicates their first, second and third choices.  Parents are welcome to stop by the classes the first week to take a look and see what their child will be doing.  This block of time is one of our students' favorites aspects of the middle school experience. (Pictured is last year's spring Garden Elective class).  The spring offerings include:

Chess: In a competitive environment with points, students learn sportsmanship, beginning skills, game structure, strategy, chess notation, and the study of the master through film.

Open Art Studio: Students can pursue their individual interests in art through a variety of media. Mrs. Brayton will mentor this class.

Garden Innovators: Students will greet this spring in our garden, working alongside their peers and guides, Miss Amy and parent Susie Cook.

Magazine: Students will create and publish their own magazine. Students can center their magazine on an interest of their choice, i.e., fashion, sports, cars, health, pop culture, etc. They will create a cover, table of contents, advertisements, editorials, news articles, cover story, interviews, etc.- all the elements that magazines contain. By the end of the elective, students will have encountered various types of writing and publish their first magazine.

Music on the Keyboard: Students learn to record their own songs, work on contemporary songs, and play around with style, voicing, and arranging.

Student Council /Leadership: This elective is open to and required for those students who win the upcoming class representative elections, and Student Council officers.

Middle School Lenten Project -- Beach Clean-Up
Beach 1
Our 6th, 7th and 8th graders had a fun and productive day on Friday cleaning up Doran Beach.  They traveled by bus and after a morning of hard work, the students had lunch and had a chance to explore the coastal habitat.  They headed home happy, hot and exhausted.

Re-enrollment Contracts Are Overdue
Enrollment
Your re-enrollment contract for your child is past due.  We have a number of students on a waiting list for next year to join our school.  It is crucial that we have signed paperwork from existing families as we plan admissions offers and teacher hiring for the 2013-2014 school year.  Thank you for your prompt attention.  Please see Mrs. Fischman if you have any questions or concerns.
Clarification Re: Diocese Morality Letters for Teachers

We have received some questions and want to clarify that Presentation School is NOT one of the fifteen local Catholic schools to recently receive "morality" letters from the diocese. Teachers and administrators at schools that are part of the Santa Rosa diocese have been told that they must sign these letters (whether they are Catholic or not) in order for them to continue to teach in those schools.  You can read more about it here.

All teachers from St. Francis Solano School, Cardinal-Newman High School, St. Vincent's High School and Hanna High School received the letters but Presentation School is an independent school and not part of any diocese. (Justin-Siena High School is independent from the diocese).

The national press has been reporting on the story. The National Catholic Reporter stated: "The [teacher] contracts now include an addendum requiring they agree they are 'a ministerial agent of the bishop' and that they reject 'modern errors' that 'gravely offend human dignity,' including 'but not limited to' contraception, abortion, same-sex marriage and euthanasia." The signed letters were due back to the diocese March 15.
