 ARTS Program Tackles Shimomura
4th grade
On a recent gorgeous spring day, Rosemary McNeely (on behalf of the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art) and Klara Crean flung open the door to the 5th grade classroom and opened the students' eyes to the work of famed Japanese artist Roger Shimomura.  He is the next artist featured at the museum, after the Cuban show.

Shimomura's most famous work is based on his experience in the Japanese internment camps as a young child. The fifth grade class has started to discuss this portion of American history and will have a guest speaker come to the class on March 15th. The speaker was also in the camps as a child and will share some of her experiences.

The art that the class is creating is part self-portrait and part positive response banners, a way for us to turn the negative aspects of history into a positive action we can take now against discrimination. The student work will be displayed at the museum later in the spring and our school community will receive invitations to the gallery opening when the date is set.

Families of 5th-8th Grade Students:
Important Golf Team Information
Golf
We are interested in fielding a golf team of boys and girls in the 5th-8th grades.   Students practice their golf skills, learn about competitive play and compete in a series of matches against several other Catholic schools in our area.
If you have a student who shows a strong interest in the sport, with our without prior experience, please contact me directly at the email below.  If you are a parent with golf knowledge and an interest in coaching and monitoring matches - we need you!  The only way for us to create a golf team for this school year is with the support of at least one more coach to work with David Grieve.
Golf Team Specifics:
Practices to be held 1-2x a week directly after school for 1 1/2 hours, either at Grieve house or Sonoma Golf Club. Days of week yet to be determined.  Understanding other sport commitments in the spring, attending 1 practice a week would be sufficient if the student could practice on their own during the week.  Practices start at the end of March.
There are approximately 6 matches that will be held - all during the week (usually Mondays or Tuesdays).  Team members would need to be available to play for a minimum of 3 matches. Matches to be held end of April through May.
Please let us know parent coach interest and student interest by Tuesday, March 11th.

Grade 4 Travels to Fish Hatchery
Grade 4
On Thursday, March 7, the 4th grade class took a field trip to the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery at Lake Sonoma.  After the students arrived and ate lunch, we were taken on a wonderful tour of the facility. The hatchery is located at the dam on Lake Sonoma.   First students got to see how the fish were raised and tracked and we watched as adult steelhead were spawned. We then walked to the fish ladder where we watched huge adult steelhead make their way up the ladder to return to the spawning ground where they were born.  The tour guide took us to several huge pools where they kept the trout at various stages of growth, so we got to see the various stages of a trouts life we had been learning about in science.  We were even lucky enough to feed some of the younger trout.

The field trip was incredible and highly educational.  I learned many things that I had not known before and I think the students walked away learning even more.  The next day they couldn't wait to share all the facts they had picked up on the trip. -- Joel Kuschner

Grade 5 Hosts Invention Convention
and Grade 6 Presents Its Science Fair
Invention
On Friday, our fifth graders wowed the audience of parents and other grades with their inventions at the annual Invention Convention.  They shared the gym with our sixth grade who presented a wide variety of Science Fair projects across all scientific areas.  Congratulations to all of our students on their hard work and creativity.

Re-enrollment Contracts Are Overdue
Enrollment
The re-enrollment contract for your child was due on March 1.  We have a number of students on a waiting list for next year to join our school.  It is crucial that we have signed paperwork from existing families as we plan admissions offers and teacher hiring for the 2013-2014 school year.  Thank you for your prompt attention.  Please see Mrs. Fischman if you have any questions or concerns.

Track & Field Season Starts in April!
Track Boys
Parent volunteers are needed to help coach Presentation's track & field team this spring.  We will practice at the Sonoma Valley High School track and the Middle School Sports League Track Meet is set for all day on May 3 at Santa Rosa Junior College.  No experience necessary.  Please see Miss Amy in the office if you can help out.
Presentation Students on CYO Championship Team
CYO
The Sonoma CYO 8th grade girls team celebrated last Sunday after winning the North Bay CYO Division 2 Championship with a 28-27 victory over St. Vincent's of Petaluma.

Coach Mike Minigan (a Presentation School dad) described the game as a real nail-biter.  Several St. Francis/Sonoma teams qualified for the playoffs this year, but the eighth grade girls were the only St. Francis/Sonoma team to win a championship. Four other St. Francis/Sonoma teams lost in their title games.

In all, there were 20+ teams in the St. Francis program this season, from grades 3-8, comprising more than 200 boys and girls from all over Sonoma.

Presentation students Mary Minigan and Jastine Kovacs played on the championship team.  Congratulations girls and coach Minigan!

Presentation Sixth Grader Wows at Cheer Championship
Cheer
Congratulations to sixth grader Olivia Williams, whose Petaluma Panthers team (Midgets, Novice) won 3rd place in the NATION at the Junior Nationals in Disneyland on March 4!  They went up against a lot of great teams from all over.  Her team is lower right on the stage awaiting the award ceremony.
The Thank You Box

Heartfelt thank you goes out to our wonderful After Care volunteers, Aisling Scrosoppi, Angela Zizzo, Sharna Campbell, Janel Owen, Hannah Moser, Diane Bowman and Dianna Bergmiller.
