Greetings!

30 Hour Famine Starts Friday After School
Famine
Best wishes and congratulations to our 17 middle school students who have stepped forward to participate in the 30 Hour Famine, under the leadership of Katie Faircloth.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of students in the U.S. and around the world unite to do the Famine. They learn about hunger, raise funds to help the hungry, and then go hungry themselves.

www.30hourfamine.org

Students have been asked to fundraise a minimum of $240 dollars toward the cause and all have committed to spend the 30 hours.  If you would like to donate, please visit our school's team page HERE.

Participating this year are: 8th graders Tessa and Katie, 7th graders
Brigit, Sophie, Hannah, Genaro, Natalie, Catherine, Wriley and Aria and 6th graders Mikaela, Kirsten, Julia, Nell, Eva, Hannah Rose and Alison.

6th Grade Artists Tackle Hokusai's Wave Painting
Wave
If you haven't already stopped by the school library, come check out the amazing artwork produced by our 6th grade students, under the direction of school parent and artist Rosemary McNeely. (Thank you Rosemary!) The students had a great time studying this iconic work of art and learning about Hokusai.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. An example of ukiyo-e art, it was published sometime between 1830 and 1833 as the first in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.  It is his most famous work and one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. It depicts an enormous wave threatening boats near the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa.

Last weekend, during our kindergarten assessments, many prospective families gathered in the library remarked on the talent of our students.

Presentation Student Interviews Salman Khan!
Khan interview
In early February, four local junior journalists with the local classroom newspaper, Kids Scoop News, had the opportunity to visit the headquarters of Khan Academy in Mountain View and interview the founder of the academy, Salman Khan.

Khan Academy (khanacademy.org) is a popular non-profit web site with a library of more than 4,000 video tackling K-12 math, science and humanities topics, used by a number of our classrooms for enrichment. Each video is approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

The students were Presentation School fifth grader Jonas Crean (in red shirt), Petaluma sixth grader Jadon Borsage, Adele Harrison eighth grader Noah Bartolome and Adele Harrison seventh grader Kimberly Uzzo.

The students' questions ranged from the personal, such as what kind of a student he was, to specifics about Khan's business model including whether or not the badges on the Khan Academy website are positively affecting the motivation of the user.

Look for the full interview in the April issue of Kid Scoop News, available in our library.  Congratulations Jonas!

Zero Period Band Practice a Big Hit
Zero period
It is not too late to join in the fun of our new Zero Period Band Class on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30am to 8:10am in the library.  Students need not be very experienced, all ages and levels are welcome!  We are sorry that we cannot store instruments for liability reasons, so please make arrangements to collect instruments at 8:10am each morning.
Presentation Leads All Valley Schools in Spelling Bee Results
Spelling
A further breakdown of the results from the recent Sonoma South County spelling Bee is now available and while our students will not head on to the next level, we found out that sixth grader Jack Wolff made it the furthest of all students from our area schools with a finishing spot of 8th.

Also finishing in the top fifteen were one student from Adele, one from St. Francis and a second Presentation student, Amanda Jue, grade 6.

These annual spelling competitions, which are open to the public, are designed to promote and acknowledge exemplary student achievement. Congratulations Jack and Amanda!

Your re-enrollment contract for your child was due last Friday.  We have a number of students on a waiting list for next year to join our school.  It is crucial that we have signed paperwork from existing families as we plan admissions offers and teacher hiring for the 2013-2014 school year.  Thank you for your prompt attention.  Please see Mrs. Fischman if you have any questions or concerns.
