School Garden Update
The first signs of spring are beginning to show in the school garden. Seedlings have recently been planted that will be cultivated and harvested as the months grow warmer. Globe artichokes have been planted, as well as shelling peas, snow peas, fava beans, and lots of spring greens. The kinders filled a whole round tub with tiny seedlings of red Swiss chard. In the orchard, a Chojuro asian pear tree was planted to replace the apricot tree that didn't take root. It should yield its first crop of juicy Asian pears by the beginning of school next fall. We are looking forward to a bountiful spring!

Mardi Gras Fun for All
Last week, the school enjoyed great fun on Fat Tuesday and a beautiful liturgy on Ash Wednesday (not to mention the students' thrill over back to back non-uniform days).
In grades 3, 4 and 5, students cycled through the different homerooms enjoying homemade pancakes, Mardi Gras bead crafts and mask making.
And the 2nd graders treated us to a lively parade around the entire campus!

Middle School Video Filmmaking Workshop--Spots Still Available
There are still two spots available for a Presentation student to participate in the Sonoma Film Festival/Boys & Girls Club's annual free middle school filmmaking workshop. The incredible opportunity is offered free of charge to a dozen local teens.
The workshop centers around the creation of short live-action videos.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma provides instructors, a location for the workshop and use of its state-of-the-art computer lab and editing equipment.
The workshop is a commitment for the students who are chosen to participate from public and private schools throughout Sonoma Valley. They arrive at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and work from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, breaking only for a pizza lunch.
The students start by learning how to use a camera: framing, close-ups, long shots, tilting, panning and using a tripod. They learn how to use camera angles to help tell a story and are introduced to different types of microphones. They learn how to maintain continuity of a scene, which becomes important during editing. The first day they also come up with a storyline for their short piece, which will each have a running time of several minutes.
The students are divided into three small groups of three or four students, each led by notable local video producers and directors who have more than 20 years experience in the field. All the student videos are screened at the beginning of the film festival's Youth Works Program in April at the Sebastiani Theater.
If your student is interested in attending, please email Nancy Fischman today or on Monday.

6th Grade Studies Earth Science and Plate Teutonics and 5th Grade Explores the Scientific Process Behind Rusting
Our 6th graders spent the week creatively learning about plate tectonics and the earth's core structure, culminating in a project where each student had to create something edible that mirrored the Earth's inner composition. Some notable entries included hard boiled eggs, cakes, jello molds, and more.
Also busy in the science lab was the 5th grade who conducted an experiment with steel wool to see if and how (and to learn why) some metals rust.

7th Grade Continues Study of Feudalism
Last week, Mrs. Carroll's 7th grade classroom had several special visitors. Kouji Yamada has a graduate degree from Harvard and he is a visiting professor at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan. He spoke to the class about the similarities and differences between feudal knights and Japanese Samurai, and about feudalism in Japan/Europe and why feudal patterns persisted so much longer in Japan even as the West moved towards urbanization. School mom Mitsuyo McDermott provided some Japanese translation and Andrew McDemott a historical perspective.
