7th Graders Enjoy Shakespeare Festival
Report from Mrs. Carroll:
Excited yet road-weary, the seventh grade students arrived in Ashland ready to begin their adventure at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. From Oct. 9-12 the students and their chaperones were immersed in the world of theatre and the autumnal beauty of Ashland.
Tuesday night found us under the stars watching a powerful performance of Henry V. Wednesday morning the students and I took part in an OSF workshop centered on the elements of storytelling /drama. Students were engaged in fun hands-on group activities and student-created skits. Leading the workshop were two young actors in the theatre company and students were delighted to recognize them on stage in the plays. That afternoon afforded the students time to enjoy Lithia Park and the town. The evening found us in the Angus Bowmer indoor theatre watching the zany antics of a musical version of the Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers.
Thursday was a jam-packed day. The morning began with a backstage tour for the students and their chaperones. The matinee of Romeo and Juliet set in "Alta-California" in the 1800s was a hit with the seventh graders. They had read the entire play prior to leaving for Ashland and were eagerly anticipating seeing a live performance. That night found us under the stars for our last play, As You Like It.
It boasted a breathtaking set and energetic acting.
Overall this exciting field trip was a tremendous success. A special thank you goes to the chaperones, who make this off-campus kind of learning possible for our students.

Yearbook Prices Goes Up Nov. 1
This is the last call to buy your yearbook before the Josten's price increase on Nov. 1. It is easy to place your order online by clicking here.
Also, it is not too early to submit photos for the yearbook as our yearbook elective students are already busy starting to lay out pages in the book. If you have an iPhone or Android, you can download a free App called Replay here and use it to easily upload any photos you might take around campus. Parents can also submit photos using their computers by clicking on the link located at the Schoolyard website. If parents want to leave a flash drive or a cd of images in the office, the yearbook staff can upload them as well.

Grade 6 Pilots Khan Academy
In an effort to offer a fun way for students to practice their math skills, sixth grade math teachers Joel Kuschner and Laurie Gaynor are asking parents to sign their children up for Khan Academy. It is free and offers a point-based program for students to practice their math skills. It is a wonderful way for them to practice and refine skills that are being taught in class.
Joel and Laurie are listed as their "coaches" and every time a student logs in, their coach can see their progress and where they are excelling and needing additional support.
Joel and Laurie expect the online program to be a fantastic tool for students to practice math and they will also occasionally assign homework to work on certain skills through Khan Academy.

Imagine: A Night of Fun!
What a great event! Thank you to all the parents who worked so hard to pull off a fantastic evening, in particular Therese and Mike Nugent, Lisa Dierking, Alyson Douglas. Jeanine Parlett, Dawn O'Neill and Beth Porter, as well as Nancy Bei. Thunder was a big hit, the food was delicious and the auction profitable and exciting.
The winner of the Golden Ticket was Dawn O'Neill who graciously donated her choice, the week in Cape Cod, back to the auction!

Grade 4 Studies Food Chain in Science
In science this month, our fourth graders are learning about the food chain in different environmental habitats. Students conducted research in our computer lab to learn about the food chain in the ocean, desert, rain forest and savanna. They then combined all their different food chains to make a food web. Right now they are enjoying creating a wall chart depicting who eats who in the food chain.
