6th Grade Thrills at Mount Hermon Field Experience
Our sixth graders spent a thrilling four days at Mount Hermon Outdoor Science School last week, accompanied by their two teachers, Mrs. Walthard and Mr. Kuschner, and a handful of parent chaperones. The program is an exciting, academic, and experiential hands-on program based on the California Science Framework. Our students actively participate in outdoor science exploration and learning, intentionally designed to increase awareness and understanding of our physical environment while growing in good stewardship of our natural resources. They also got to try the zip line!
Founded in 1905, Mount Hermon was the first Christian camp west of the Mississippi. Mount Hermon's 440 acres are set among the Santa Cruz coastal redwoods, 70 miles south of San Francisco, and just 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. In four distinct ecosystems students explored and learned in a unique and dynamic environment. Extensive hiking trails lie next door in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, providing hours of fun and exploration.
Our students viewed native oaks, Ponderosa Pines and the rare sandhills habitat, which is distinct to this area. Naturalists guided our students through diverse coastal mountain region through creek research, redwood forest communities, animal identification, night hiking, habitat restoration and more.

Yearbook Prices Goes Up Nov. 1
We are urging all parents to place their order for their student's yearbook this week to avoid the Josten's price increase on Nov. 1. It is easy to place your order online by
Also, it is not too early to submit photos for the yearbook as our yearbook elective students are already busy starting to lay out pages in the book. If you have an iPhone or Android, you can download a free App called Replay here and use it to easily upload any photos you might take around campus. Parents can also submit photos using their computers by clicking on the link located at the Schoolyard website. If parents want to leave a flash drive or a cd of images in the office, the yearbook staff can upload them as well.

Cross County Beats The Heat
Report from Coach Amy:
Last week's meet was not in Petaluma. With temperatures reaching 99 degrees, it felt more like the Mojave than the town usually shaded by coastal fog and a cool breeze. No trees and a marsh that gave off a distinguished smell was the backdrop for our Patriots. Staying positive our 5th graders set out on their mile run. Shortly after they returned, 7th graders set off for their turn on their 2 mile loop. Both trails were gravel and asphalt, similar to that of our local bike bath.
Thankfully, the 7th graders had adults manning water stations along their route to ensure their safety. Our 5th grade girls had Ms. Amy and Mr. Schillinger at the mile marker and the 3/4 marker checking in. Four igloos of ice cold water, two misters and seven beet red faces later we rounded out our third meet.
Competing in the extreme heat, as strenuous as it was, encouraged our runners to focus on one key element of this sport. Pace. Our students had to find that rhythm in their step, breathe and try not to find themselves sinking into a mirage. I say with pride, they accomplished that and more. Way to go team!
Congrats to Michaela Schillinger for coming in second place in the 5th grade girls division. Our next meet will be Tuesday, October 16th in Windsor. |

7th Grade Science Studies The Plant Reproduction System in Hands-On Lab
Last week in seventh grade, our students studied the criteria, necessities, and components of life. They learned about reproduction in living things, were introduced to the concepts of cells and homeostasis, and enjoyed an introduction to organic chemistry and ecology. In a hands on lab, they observed asexual and sexual reproduction in plants. They planted seeds, fertilized a stargazer lily, and planted spider plant "babies."
