Warners Bay Community Garden
Greetings!

Work has commenced on Stage 1 of the Warners Bay Community Garden at the Bunya Park site! After many years of planning, it was amazing to finally get started!

The 18th of October was a beautiful sunny day and we had a fantastic turn-out of volunteers to help with the very first steps in the construction of the garden. We started work on installation of a sediment fence that will remain in place whilst the swale is being constructed and planted out in the coming months. It was a very productive day and a lot of fun for those that came along with a sausage sizzle and chance to get to know each other a little better.

There will be lots of work to do in coming months, and it's easy to get involved - just:

  1. Review and sign the Member's Pledge (available online here or onsite on the day)
  2. Renew your membership (payment instructions here)
  3. Attend a short work & safety briefing on the day 9:15am
  4. Ensure you prepare appropriately such as having covered footwear, a hat, sunscreen and drinking water etc.

Walking or cycling to the garden is preferable but if vehicular travel is your only option, please obey the street parking signage and do not park on residents lawns / driveways. As a guide, this map indicates preferred parking locations.

Building The Swale
On 25 October a group of volunteers gathered at the garden once again to start work on our swale. The swale is a low ditch & mound that helps protect the native bushland from any sediment or nutrient runoff from the Community Garden. It was a very hot day - but great progress was made and everyone enjoyed a lovely lunch together

A big thank you to Phil from Lake Excavations for taking the time out of his Saturday to assist with the swale construction.

Remaining Resilient
On a less positive note... on Sunday 26th Oct, one of our members reported that vandals had pulled out the sediment fencing that the team worked so hard to install the week before. This is regrettable but not unexpected. Most community gardens experience some form of damage when starting out. The best way to respond is to rebuild and move on. The damage has been repaired as best we can but we ask that if you observe any acts of vandalism taking place, please take note of the culprits and contact the police on 131 444.

Gabby's Garden

Children enjoy the garden at Gabby's Family Day Care

Gabby's is a local family day care centre in Warners Bay that is part of a network childcare centres, pre-schools and schools that support the Warners Bay Community Garden. Gabby, the children and families from her centre collect and prepare milk bottles for donation to be used as seedling baskets. We can then use the baskets to grow seedlings for our market stalls. Warners Bay Community Garden appreciates the great support provided by Gabby's.
