July 2016 Safety Spotlight

Hazardous Materials: OSHA's general industry standards for hazardous materials handling covers a wide variety of hazardous materials, including flammable and combustible liquids, compressed gases, LP-gases and cryogenic liquids. Hazardous materials and toxic substances pose many health hazards to workers. OSHA requires that all workers with potential exposure to hazardous materials receive training in the proper handling and storage of hazardous and toxic substances.

Upcoming OSHA 2015 - Hazardous Materials classes include:

July 25-28 | Lakewood, CA Next Week!

August 22-25 | San Francisco Bay Area - Dublin, CA

September 26-29 | Las Vegas, NV Area (Henderson)

Fall Protection: Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry. Now more than ever it is essential for employers with personnel who work at heights or near ground or wall openings to provide comprehensive fall protection. Falls can be prevented and lives can be saved through three important and highly effective steps: Plan ahead to get the job done safely; Provide the right equipment; and Train everyone to use the equipment safely.

Upcoming OSHA 3115 - Fall Protection classes include:

July 26-28 | Henderson, NV (Las Vegas Area) Next Week!

October 3-5 | Sacramento, CA

Bloodborne Pathogens: The CDC estimates that 5.6 million workers in the health care industry and related occupations are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. All occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) places workers at risk for infection from bloodborne pathogens. OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standard protects workers who can reasonably be anticipated to come into contact with blood or OPIM as a result of doing their job duties.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OSHA 7200 - Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control for Healthcare Facilities at the following location:

August 15 | Santa Rosa, CA

OSHA's Longshoring and Marine Terminals Guidesheets Help Prevent Maritime Industry Fatalities

The Longshoring and Marine Terminals: Fatal Facts Guidesheets have been developed to help employers and workers in the maritime cargo handling industry recognize and control the significant hazards commonly experienced in longshoring and marine terminal operations. The guidesheets address the most frequent sources of fatalities in the maritime cargo handling industry. Each guidesheet contains a hazard summary describing the circumstances that may have contributed to the hazards and how the specific accident could have been prevented.

Each hazard summary specifically denotes the industry process, the employee's activity at the time of the incident, the hazard to which the employee was exposed and the probable cause of the fatality. Control measures for preventing similar incidents in the future are recommended. Illustrations present a visual depiction of the situation being addressed, and reference materials are included, such as the specific standards that were applicable to the incident.

The guidesheets are divided into three major categories: vehicular accidents, falls/drowning and material handling accidents, and reflect 42 actual OSHA case file summaries of workplace incidents in which longshoring workers were killed while performing their jobs. OSHA's goal is to help employers better evaluate their respective operations, take the necessary action to make their workplaces safer, and increase the safety and health awareness of workers by providing insight regarding accident avoidance.

See Longshoring and Marine Terminals: Fatal Facts Guidesheets.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OSHA 5410 - OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry at the following locations:

OSHA Penalty Adjustments Effective August 1, 2016

In November 2015, Congress enacted legislation requiring federal agencies to adjust their civil penalties to account for inflation. The Department of Labor is adjusting penalties for its agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

OSHA's maximum penalties, which were last adjusted in 1990, will increase by 78%. Going forward, the agency will continue to adjust its penalties for inflation each year based on the Consumer Price Index.

The new penalties will take effect on August 1, 2016. Any citations issued by OSHA on or after that date will be subject to the new penalties if the related violations occurred after November 2, 2015.

See OSHA Penalty Adjustments Fact Sheet.
