March Safety Spotlight and Featured Classes at the OSHA Training Center

OSHA Mandates Specialized Safety Training for Federal Agency Collateral Duty Personnel

OSHA requires federal agencies to provide training for collateral duty safety and health personnel and all members of certified occupational safety and health committees commensurate with the scope of their assigned responsibilities. Since collateral assignments and committee appointments entail safety and health duties over and above their primary job descriptions, it is critically important that these collateral duty employees and committee members receive adequate training to prepare them for their additional safety and health responsibilities.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OSHA 6000 - Collateral Duty Course for Other Federal Agencies on March 21-24, 2016, in Dublin, California in the San Francisco Bay Area. Click here to register.

Workers Breathe Easier with Respiratory Protection

OSHA standards require respiratory protection to prevent atmospheric contamination and control occupational diseases caused by breathing contaminated air. Respiratory hazards are an everyday occurrence at many job sites, yet respiratory protection is a commonly overlooked aspect of workplace safety. Exposure to harmful dust, fumes, gases, sprays, vapors and smoke can cause long term damage as well as immediate life threatening reactions and even death.

Upcoming OSHA 2225 - Respiratory Protection classes at the OSHA Training Center include:

March 29-April 1, 2016 | San Francisco Bay Area - Dublin, CA

May 24-27, 2016 | Henderson (Las Vegas Area), Nevada

OSHA Highlights 3 Key Steps in Fall Protection: Plan, Provide and Train

Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry. Now more than ever it is essential for employers with personnel who work at heights or near ground or wall openings to provide comprehensive fall protection. OSHA standards emphasize that falls can be prevented and lives can be saved through three important and highly effective steps: plan, provide and train. Employers who design a thorough fall protection plan, provide the right equipment and train their workers on hazard awareness and the proper use of safety equipment can create a workplace that greatly reduces falling hazards, complies with OSHA standards and ultimately saves lives.

Upcoming OSHA 3115 - Fall Protection classes at the OSHA Training Center include:

April 4-6, 2016 | Sacramento, CA Safety Center

May 18-20, 2016 | San Francisco Bay Area - Dublin, CA

Safety and Health Inspections Help Reduce Worksite Hazards

Safety and health inspections conducted periodically are an essential element in the control and elimination of hazards at worksites. While a competent and aware workforce is the best ongoing protection against accidents and injuries, inspections can provide a concentrated focus on overlooked hazards and potential problems. Conducting periodic safety and health inspections is an effective way to reduce or eliminate workplace hazards, provide safety awareness training and ensure workforce commitment to safe work practices.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OTC 308 - Safety Inspection Techniques on April 6-8, 2016, and August 29-31, 2016, in Dublin, California in the San Francisco Bay Area.

New Process for Submitting OSHA Outreach Training Reports and Card Requests

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, along with all OSHA Training Institute Education Centers across the country, is now participating in a new online database system for submission of OSHA Outreach Training reports and card requests. New outreach cards will provide better fraud protection and will include a QR code which will allow employers and workers to verify the authenticity of the card. The cost will now be $8.00 per new card, and will remain at $25.00 for a replacement card.

The OTI Education Centers will maintain an electronic database of authorized trainers and students who have completed the 10- and 30-hour classes. This will allow employers and workers to authenticate their card with the use of a QR code on each card. Workers who already have 10-hour and 30-hour cards do not need to change over to the new cards. They may choose to purchase a new card by contacting the trainer who conducted the class, but only if the course was taken within the past three years. The new cards will be issued for in-person training sessions only. Online courses will continue to be offered by authorized providers, but students who complete online training will continue to receive paper cards at this time.
