Tommie Jones

1952 - 2015

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Tommie Jones, long time instructor at the OSHA Training Center. Tommie was an authorized Fed/OSHA and Cal/OSHA general and construction industry safety trainer, and served as course chair and instructor for several safety courses at the OSHA Training Center, including OSHA standards courses, Accident Investigation, Machine Guarding, HAZWOPER, HAZCOM, Job Hazard Analysis and Collateral Duty Course for Other Federal Agencies.

Tommie was a very popular and highly effective instructor who will be greatly missed by the OSHA Training Center staff, students and his fellow instructors.

Holiday Safety Tips for Lights

The following are safety tips for holiday lights from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

  • Whether indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety, identified by a label from an independent testing laboratory.
  • Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Discard damaged sets or repair them before using.
  • Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house, walls or other firm support to protect from wind damage.
  • Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord.
  • Turn off all lights on trees and other decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Lights could short and start a fire.
  • Never use electric lights on a metallic tree.
  • Plan for safety. Look for and eliminate potential danger spots near electrical connections.

NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace 2015 Update

Hundreds of deaths and thousands of burn injuries occur each year due to shock, electrocution, arc flash and arc blast. Compliance with NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace could help eliminate most of these preventable incidents. Originally developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) at the request of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), NFPA 70E provides the latest information regarding the effects of arc flash, arc blast and direct current (dc) hazards, and highlights recent developments in electrical design and personal protective equipment (PPE).

The 2015 update of NFPA 70E introduces a major change in how stakeholders evaluate electrical risk so that owners, managers and employees can work together to ensure an electrically safe working area and comply with OSHA 1910 Subpart S and OSHA 1926 Subpart K. Key changes throughout the Standard replace the phrase "hazard analysis" with "risk assessment" to enable a shift in awareness regarding the potential for failure. Revisions enhance usability, such as the division of requirements into new sections separating construction and maintenance work from outdoor work.

Other changes include:

  • New requirement 320.3 (A)(1) covers risk assessment associated with battery work;
  • New subsection in 130.2 (A)(4) provides requirements where normal operation of electric equipment is permitted;
  • Annex E has been updated to correlate with the redefined terminology associated with hazard and risk, and provides clarity and consistency of definitions as well as risk management principles vital to electrical safety.
