New OSHA Publication Boosts Awareness of OSHA's Fall Protection in Construction Standard

Falls continue to be the leading cause of fatalities in construction, accounting for about one-third of all fatalities in the industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 291 fatal falls to a lower level in construction in 2013, out of 828 total fatalities. Recognizing that incidents involving falls are generally complex events, frequently involving a variety of factors, OSHA has developed a standard for fall protection that deals with both human and equipment-related issues in protecting workers from fall hazards.

In order to help workers and employers better understand the Fall Protection in Construction Standard's requirements and the reasons behind them, OSHA has issued Fall Protection in Construction, a 48-page overview of frequently cited OSHA standards in the construction industry. The fall protection guide covers a wide variety of topics, including:

  • What Subpart M - Fall Protection Covers
  • Conventional Fall Protection Systems
  • Positioning Device Systems
  • Fall Restraint Systems
  • Protection from Falling Objects
  • Fall Protection Plans
  • Fall Protection Training

Fall Protection in Construction and additional fall protection information, may be downloaded from the OSHA Fall Protection webpage.  Fall protection resources are also available from the OSHA Training Center Fall Protection-Free Resources webpage.

OSHA 3115 - Fall Protection is being offered at the OSHA Training Center on October 5-7 in Sacramento, CA, and November 16-18 in Las Vegas, NV.

Electrical Safety Training Makes the Jobsite Safer for All

OSHA's Electrical Standard requires that employers provide protection to all employees who work on or near any part of an electrical power circuit or are exposed to electrical hazards. Employers and contractors are further required to provide training to all workers who can be exposed to electrical hazards and retraining or updating as needed to maintain safety awareness.

In order for electrical safety training to be effective, the major hazards that could be encountered by employees working directly or indirectly with electrical systems should be addressed. Key elements of electrical safety training include:

  • Instruction on ground-fault circuit interrupters for all workers who use power tools and other electrical equipment;
  • Visual inspection of all electrical equipment before use;
  • Guidelines for removal from service of equipment with frayed cords, missing ground prongs, cracked tool casings and other potential hazards;
  • Use of power tools and equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions;
  • Proper inspection, use and maintenance of extension cords;
  • How to recognize a locked and tagged electrical source and to understand how the Lockout/Tagout process affects their specific work areas;
  • Awareness of protective barriers, approach boundaries and warning signage;
  • Required personal protective equipment (PPE) and its proper use.

Employers and contractors who implement electrical safety training can not only ensure their company's compliance with OSHA safety standards, but, more importantly, reduce the risk of electrical accidents and enhance the level of protection for everyone at the jobsite.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards on October 5-8, 2015, in Dublin, CA. This 4-day course covers electrical standards and the hazards associated with electrical installations and equipment. For information and registration visit the OSHA Training Center website.

Machine Guarding an Essential Element of Workplace Safety

Moving machine parts have the potential to cause severe workplace injuries, including crushed fingers or hands, amputations, burns and blindness. Safeguards are essential for protecting workers from these preventable injuries. Any machine part, function or process with the potential for causing injury must be safeguarded using control methods that prevent employee contact with hazardous areas through effective machine guarding techniques. In addition, a hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout) program needs to complement machine safeguarding methods in order to protect employees during potentially hazardous servicing and maintenance work activities.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OSHA 2045 - Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards on October 19-22, 2015, in two convenient California locations, Dublin and Carson. The class focuses on various types of common machinery, their related safety standards and the control of hazardous energy sources (lockout/tagout). Participants will learn to recognize hazards and to provide options for abatement, including for mechanical motions, actions created by points of operation and other machinery processes.
