OSHA Addresses the Dangers of Trenching and Excavation in Construction

Trenching and excavation are widely recognized as among the most hazardous construction operations, resulting in an average of two deaths per month and hundreds of injuries each year due to trench collapses. OSHA has addressed construction-related trenching and excavation hazards by developing specific safety standards for the construction industry, making the requirements easier to understand and providing construction employers with various options for classifying soil and selecting employee protection methods.

Cave-ins pose the greatest risk in trenching and excavation operations, and are much more likely than other excavation-related accidents to result in worker fatalities. Other potential hazards include falls, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres, and incidents involving mobile equipment. One cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car.

For additional information on trenching and excavation safety, visit OSHA's Trenching and Excavation webpage.

The OSHA Training Center is offering OSHA 3015 - Excavation, Trenching, and Soil Mechanics in Bakersfield, CA, on Sept. 21-23, 2015. Students will learn about practical soil mechanics and the relationship to the stability of shored and unshored slopes and walls of excavations. Various types of shoring, including hydraulic and wood timbers, are covered. Testing methods are demonstrated and a field exercise is conducted, allowing students to use instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears and engineering rods.

OSHA Releases Updated Heat Safety App for Apple Devices

OSHA has announced the release of a new version of its Heat Safety App for Apple devices to help spotlight its annual campaign to prevent heat illness in outdoor workers. OSHA's updated app features full-screen color alerts, improved navigation and accessibility options that instantly alert users working in high-risk zones due to heat and humidity and provide precautions to prevent heat-related illness.

Every year, thousands of workers suffer from heat-related illnesses, resulting in death for some, even though illnesses and deaths from heat exposure are totally preventable. Making OSHA's Heat Safety Tool available to workers on their smartphones is just one of many ways that employers can save lives and prevent heat-related illnesses.

OSHA's free heat safety mobile app, available in English and Spanish for both Android and Apple devices enables workers and supervisors to monitor the heat index at their worksites. By combining both temperature and humidity into a single value, the heat index is a better measure than air temperature alone for estimating the risk to workers from environmental heat sources.

The OSHA Training Center's Heat Illness Prevention webpage features a variety of free heat-related illness resources, including training materials, a supervisor's daily checklist and worker fact sheets on heat illness prevention.

Cal/OSHA Issues Amended Heat Illness Prevention Regulation

Cal/OSHA's Heat Illness Prevention Regulation was amended effective May 1, 2015. See Guidance for Employers and Employees on the New Requirements for help in developing written procedures to be in compliance with the amended regulation.

OSHA's Safety Pays Program Helps Show Impact of Injuries and Illnesses on the Bottom Line

If you are looking for an easy-to-use tool to help you demonstrate the impact of workplace injuries and illnesses on your company's profitability, check out the recently updated OSHA Safety Pays Program. This program uses a company's profit margin, the average costs of an injury or illness and an indirect cost multiplier to project the amount of sales a company would need to covers those costs.

OSHA has updated the program to include more recent workers' compensation data from the National Council on Compensation Insurance. The program is now available in a format that can be easily read by mobile devices. For more information on the costs of workplace injuries and illnesses, and the benefits of investing in workplace safety and health, see OSHA's Business Case for Safety and Health webpage and the U.S. Department of Labor Blog written by Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels.
