OSHA Training Center Spotlights Professional Certificate Program to Promote Safer Workplaces

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District offers a Professional Safety Certificate Training Program designed to broaden the safety expertise of employees and enhance workplace hazard prevention and safety awareness. Program participants can choose from three levels of certification to match their individual goals for professional development in the growing field of occupational safety and health.

The OSHA Training Center Professional Certificate Program provides a broad base of vital safety and health information with immediate practical applications for workplace safety. This program gives participants the opportunity to advance their safety knowledge and promote safety awareness in their workplaces.

The three levels of certification include:

The Safety Associate Certificate (SA) - Level I offers a solid foundation in OSHA Standards and broadens participants' knowledge and skills in understanding OSHA regulations and developing solutions to workplace safety challenges.

The Specialist in Safety and Health Certificate (SSH) - Level II is designed to expand and improve the practical skills of those responsible for employee safety and health in their workplaces.

The Certified Safety and Health Official Certificate (CSHO) - Level III guides students through the growing maze of safety and health regulations - employee safety, liability, training requirements, loss control, program development and implementation - to help them develop their staff's expertise in safety and health strategies.

OSHA's HAZWOPER Standard Addresses Significant Threat of Hazardous Substances

The dumping of hazardous substances poses a significant environmental threat that can lead to serious safety and health problems. Toxic, flammable or corrosive substances can cause fires, explosions and pollution of air, water and land. Hazardous substances must be properly treated, stored or disposed of to eliminate or greatly reduce potential harm to human and animal life and the environment.

Because of the seriousness of the safety and health hazards related to hazardous waste operations and emergency response, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Standard, Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Parts 1910.120 (General Industry) and 1926.65 (Construction), to protect employees and to help them handle hazardous substances safely and effectively.

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is offering two 40-Hour HAZWOPER classes (OTC 204) in 2015, on June 15-19 and August 17-21 in Dublin, California (San Francisco Bay Area). The class is designed to ensure awareness and promote safety among employees who may be exposed to chemical hazards, and offers participants written and hands-on instruction in hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) related to chemical and physical exposures in industrial and field settings. This class satisfies the requirement for generalized employee training under OSHA Standards 1910.120 and 1926.65.

June is National Safety Month

Help save lives and prevent injuries! Join the National Safety Council, the OSHA Training Center and thousands of organizations across the country as we work to raise awareness of what it takes to stay safe. National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road and in our homes and communities.

The theme for this June's National Safety Month is "What I Live For." Engaging in safe behaviors allows everyone to live for what matters to them. So what do you live for? By sharing stories and providing resources, such as posters, tip sheets, safety checklists and an infographic, we can work together on keeping each other safe wherever we are.

This year's safety focus includes transportation safety, ergonomics, emergency preparedness and slips, trips and falls. Visit the National Safety Council website for more information.
