OSHA Training Center Offers Classes to Address OSHA's Top Ranked Construction Industry Violations

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is offering upcoming OSHA standards-based training classes designed to address construction industry hazards that consistently rank among the most frequently cited standards by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA publishes its annual Top Ten list of the most frequently cited violations resulting from worksite inspections to alert employers and workers to be proactive in identifying and correcting the most common workplace hazards.

Fall protection, scaffolding and ladders rank first, third and seventh on OSHA's 2014 Top Ten list of most frequent violations, as they have for the last several years. By providing a variety of construction-related safety and health training classes in locations throughout California, Nevada and Arizona, the OSHA Training Center is striving to help employers and workers reduce the risks associated with common and preventable construction worksite hazards.

Upcoming OSHA Training Center classes that address OSHA's most frequently cited construction standards include:

OSHA 510 - OSHA Standards for the Construction Industry, which covers OSHA Standards, policies and procedures in the construction industry, including scope and application of OSHA Construction Standards and construction safety and health principles, with special emphasis on those areas in construction which are most hazardous.

OSHA Training Center Moves Up to Top 3 OSHA Training Institute Education Centers in U.S.

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is now ranked 3rd of 27 OSHA Training Institute Education Centers in the U.S., and is the top ranked authorized OSHA occupational safety and health training center in Region IX, which covers California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. Based on the number of students who have attended classes each year, the OSHA Training Center has moved steadily up the ranks since its initial authorization by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 2008.

OSHA Training Institute Education Centers (OTIEC) are a national network of non-profit organizations authorized by Federal OSHA to deliver OSHA standards-based safety and health training to public and private sector workers, supervisors and employers on behalf of OSHA. The OTIEC program was established in 1992 to complement the OSHA Training Institute, which provides training and education to OSHA compliance officers.

Based on current projections through the end of the current fiscal year, the OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is on track to reach over 10,000 students since opening its doors in 2008.

Important Reminder:

Construction Industry Urged to Participate in 2nd Annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District wants to remind and encourage construction industry employers and workers to participate in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's 2nd Annual National Safety Stand-Down from May 4-15, 2015, to raise awareness about the hazards of falls in construction. Because falls account for the highest number of deaths in the construction industry, it is vitally important to raise awareness about the hazards associated with falls on construction jobsites.

During the voluntary National Safety Stand-Down construction companies are invited to break from their regular work schedule anytime from May 4-15, 2015, to conduct a safety meeting, toolbox talk or other safety activity, such as organizing a safety equipment inspection, developing rescue plans or discussing job specific hazards. Safety activities may include specific information about protective methods as well as company policies, goals and expectations regarding fall prevention and overall safety.

Fall prevention resources and information on how to conduct a successful National Safety Stand-Down activity may be found on the OSHA website. Following their participation, employers will have the opportunity to download an OSHA Certificate of Participation, provide feedback on their fall prevention activities and offer suggestions on how OSHA can improve future safety initiatives.
