The Link Between Menopause & Macular Degeneration

The Secret to Preserving Your Vision

MISSION - To help people improve their vision using safe, natural, and effective holistic therapies.   I am fully committed to delivering world-class, cutting edge holistic eye care to a global community suffering with degenerative vision loss.

Welcome to the AcuVision  Newsletter!  This is our latest issue and I am very excited to bring you an entirely new breakthrough in the field of holistic eye health.

Day-in and day-out I work with patients from all around the world dealing with all kinds of chronic eye issues - it is my life's work and one of my true, great passions.  My success rate is quite high because I carefully select only those patients that I believe will respond best to our treatment.

Approximately 80% of accepted patients see a measurable improvement, and the others are "non-responders."  I always want to do more for my patients, which is why I tend to be a bit obsessive about researching new methods in order to help more people see better, faster.
The Link Between Menopause & Macular Degeneration

Over the last few years I have observed that for some cases, there seems to be a clear link between Menopause and Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

AMD, is often characterized by the build up of fatty deposits in the macula area called "drusen." So what does menopause have to do with accumulating fatty deposits in the macula?

During menopause, a woman's system has a dramatic increase in hormonal activity. Because of these major hormonal shifts, her body needs to increase hormone production in order to meet the higher demands.

Cholesterol is the material building block for hormone production.  That's right, your hormones come from cholesterol.  When the body needs more hormones it will increase cholesterol production.

If during menopause a woman's body needs more hormones, then the body will typically increase production of cholesterol in order to meet those demands.

The rapid flooding of cholesterol systemically can cause it to deposit in different parts of the body (heart, eyes, waist-line, etc.). When cholesterol deposits build up in the eye we call that "Drusen." Drusen can clog up the retina and become obstructive.  The effect may be reduced blood flow to the macula depriving it of oxygen and vital nutrients.

The slow suffocation and nourishment can cause progressive vision loss.  If the blood supply to the macula is significantly reduced then the body may try to grow new blood vessels in order to nourish the macula.  These new blood  vessels or "neovascularization" are usually weak and can bleed, leading to wet-type AMD.

DRY AMD

A second factor that occurs during menopause that accelerates AMD - Inflammation!

The inflammatory process (night sweats and hot flashes) that many women experience during menopause can also have accelerate conditions like AMD, RP cataracts and glaucoma. The more severe the inflammation, the more stress placed on the eyes.

Of course, this does not mean every woman with menopausal symptoms will have retinal disease.  If you already have an eye condition, degeneration can be accelerated during this time if its it not properly managed.

Some supplements than can hep manage menopause include Evening Primrose oil, Black Cohosh, Chaste Tree Extract and Tumeric.  Also reducing stimulants like sugar, alcohol, smoking and caffeine can help as well.

Currently, there is no medical treatment for Dry-Type AMD - meaning that there are no drugs or surgical procedures that can help.   We know that smoking, UV light, and oxidative stress can break down the macula causing progressive vision loss.

If you have AMD and you are taking cholesterol lowering drugs you may actually be making the situation worse.    Think about it - if your body needs more cholesterol to accommodation the hormonal demands, what would these meds do?

Lowering you cholesterol, can lower the hormonal production needed to keep the body balanced during menopause.  If you choose to stay on statin meds, please make sure to take CoQ10 daily.  Do not stop taking statins or any other medications without consulting your
prescribing physician  ...  but do bring this to their attention.

For those with Wet-Type AMD, your eye doctor may be giving you injections of Lucentis or Avastin. These may help with ACTIVE bleeding or fluid build-up (edema).  If you do have bleeding and edema, these injections may help temporarily while you work with a holistic practitioner to identify the underlying causes.

I've found that the best management strategy is a combination of Acupuncture, Acu-Laser Therapy and supplements that effectively:

- Balance Hormones

- Control Inflammation

- Break Down Drusen

- Repair the Blood Vessels

- Improve Ocular Blood Flow

- Regenerate Damaged Retinal Nerve Cells

UPDATE:  Johns Hopkins Acupuncture Research Study on Retinitis Pigmentosa

Last year I was asked to create an acupuncture protocol for a study at Johns Hopkins University.  The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of acupuncture for improving vision for individuals with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).   The study was a huge success and the results far exceeded our expectations.  The results will be published later on this year (2013).

We are currently waiting on a grant approval from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in order to conduct a much larger study. We are hoping to hear from them by June and if we do get the grant, we will be seeking more prospects for that study.  Eventually we would like to do a study on Macular Degeneration and possibly glaucoma as well.

Part of our team will be presenting the research in late April 2013 at the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR's) conference at the University of Michigan.  We will also present at the The Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology (ARVO).

Of course there is no cure for RP, but our research demonstrates that acupuncture may be an effective management strategy for people with RP.  Even if we can recover some lost vision and slow the rate of vision loss, that's a huge win.  Currently there is no conventional treatment for RP.  Even the traditional recommendation of high dosing of Retinal Palpitate (Vitamin A) and DHA fish oil is in question and may not benefit all cases.  Click on the link below to view the study.

The Secret to Preserving Your Vision

 secret eyes

The average person with an eye conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinitis pigmenotsa lose their vision at a rate of 3-6% per year on average. This rate of loss accelerates as the disease progresses and with age.   There is currently no conventional medical treatment for most of these condition's and acupuncture remains the best way to and preserve vision.

This is what's going on in your eyes.  There are 4 stages of photoreceptor nerve cells:

1- Normal Structure with Normal Function

2- Normal Structure with Function Loss

3- Abnormal Structure with Function Loss

4- Dead Cells/Scar Tissue with No Function

Our unique acupuncture protocols are designed to recover function of the first three levels.  We can maintain the function of healthy eye cells, recharge cells that have become dormant and stimulate the repair and regrowth of abnormal cells.  Once the cells die and/or become scar tissue, there is nothing that can be done and the vision loss is permanent.

The only way to determine if cells are dormant or dead is through arousal.  We have found acupuncture to be among the best way to stimulate retinal cells and optic nerve.

For example, if you see two still bodies, one in a that is not alive and the other is sleeping. We cannot tell the difference until we try to arouse the bodies - one will awake and the other will not. Same goes for the eye cells.  Those that are "sleeping" will awake and vision will improve. Those cells that are dead and/or scarred over will not respond.

We have two stages of cells with impaired function that can be potentially recovered.  In a matter of days with acupuncture treatment, we can see measurable improvement in the second stage normal cells with function loss.   These second stage cells become recharged and revitalize - the vision improves.  These cells can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 months to recharge.  In most cases we see some degree of improvement in a few days.

The third stage (abnormal) cells have mutated due to low oxygen, nutritional deficiency, cell weakness and toxic accumulation. We can regenerate new healthy cells and research suggest that it takes approximately 8-12 months and up to 2 years.  This is a critical time for these cells because if they die, the damage is irreversible.

Once we've recovered the health and function of these photoreceptor cells, we MUST preserve the vision.   How do we do that? Regular maintenance! I get asked often, why do I need more than once round of treatment?  If you have AMD, RP, glaucoma, optic atrophy, optic neuritis, diabetic neurotically etc.  You have a neuro-degenerative condition.  This means that left to its own devices your body is breaking down faster than it can repair.  You need maintenance in order to manage this condition.

Imagine if you bought a new car and you decide not to change the oil on your car.  Imagine what your engine would look like after 10 years?  No one buys a car and says, "Why do I have to maintain this car, I should only have to change the oil once and that should be good enough..."  Sounds funny but this is what I sometimes hear form patients.  You cannot expect your vision to stay good if you do nothing.  We must do whatever is necessary to maintain our vision, and never give up!

Maintenance means receiving regular acupuncture treatment, watching your diet, taking your supplements and leading a healthy lifestyle.

I can say without question that in over 15 years of working with eye patients and measuring results, those who receive acupuncture regularly have significantly

slowed, maintained and in many cases reversed vision loss.

The secret to preserving vision is MAINTENANCE!
