Kristi Luchterhand, a 30 year old single parent worked for a local marketing company before being permanently laid off in December of 2008. The stress of sudden unemployment, while raising two kids on her own, was overwhelming. She soon realized that in order to obtain a good paying job, in a high demand career field, she would need long-term occupational training. Kristi turned to the WIA Dislocated Worker Program for help and met with LETC's WIA Employment and Training Specialist, John Peters to discuss options. Read Kristi's story HERE.

Marathon County Manufacturing Employer Survey (Statistical Analysis)
Analysis by: Dr. Nancy Burnett, Professor of Economics
At NCWWDB's November Board meeting, Dr. Nancy Burnett, Associate Professor of Economics at UW Oshkosh, presented detailed results of an employer survey taken in Marathon Co. There were 21 manufacturing employers who were interviewed during the summer and early fall of this year, out of the 78 manufacturing employers in that county. Twelve questions were asked, focusing on employment openings, pay, and job opening characteristics.
The report summarizes the information regarding the participating employers. Of particular note are turnover rates and the current number of employees at the firms.
The goal of this survey was only to examine the employers' side of the hiring gap. A special thanks to Dr. Burnett and her staff for the detailed analysis and interesting look at the Marathon Co. manufacturing data collected. Click HERE to view the report. Back to top
Dr. Burnett earned her Ph.D and M.A. from the University of California-Los Angeles and her B.A. from Pomona College, Claremont, CA. Prior to coming to the UW Oshkosh she taught at Claremont Graduate School, Occidental College, Claremont McKenna College, and Pepperdine University, CA.

Marathon Co. Manufacturing Wage Survey
NCWWDB thanks Dr. Burnett and her staff at the UW - Oshkosh Economics Department for the detailed analysis (see article above) of the Marathon County manufacturing data we recently collected.
The main purpose of the survey was to determine
if there was any correlation between the skilled labor shortages manufacturers were reporting and the wage/turnover rates.
NCWWDB designed the survey with input from several of our area's manufacturing, human resource directors. Their input was a critical component in providing us with aggregated data that will be useful and relevant to manufacturing employers and workforce professionals alike.
As it moves forward, NCWWDB plans on expanding the geographic area of this data set to include the majority of WDA 6. Read the entire article HERE. Back to top

NCWWDB Hosts Fourth "Networking for Talent" Event - NCWWDB recently hosted an Employer Roundtable "Networking for Talent" event for employers from the manufacturing sector to meet and talk with our "recently trained-- ready to hire" and soon to graduate Production Welding students.
NCWWDB continues its focus on helping the unemployed and underemployed re-skill to meet the needs of area employers. With the help of Ray Rogers, an Independent Contractor working as a liaison between NCWWDB, area employers, and Workforce Investments Act (WIA) participants, NCWWDB has been successfully delivering specialized, short-term training programs in north central Wisconsin. Throughout the short term training, employers remain involved by providing plant tours for the student participants to see how their skills would be used in real-life operations.
Roundtable event highlights included displays featuring samples of the student's work, space for "on the spot" interviewing, and the unique opportunity for the employers to showcase their businesses to the graduates. Four manufacturing employer representatives attended the event and took advantage of the opportunity to talk with the students, view their work, and collect resumes. Businesses represented at the roundtable were Crystal Finishing Systems, Schofield; ABR Employment Services, Schofield; and Schuette Metals, Wausau.
The Production Welding class will hold their graduation ceremony on December 19, 2012 at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau. This is the fourth employer roundtable event hosted by NCWWDB. View photos from the event HERE. Back to top

Career Spotlight - This month we will begin to explore the Health Care industry in North Central WI. The healthcare and social service industry is the largest employer in the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development area, employing over 30,000 individuals. Registered nurses are the largest occupation within this industry, with over 4,000 working in our WDA.
Similar to the rest of the nation, Wisconsin is projecting a major shortfall in the number of RN's in the coming years. A comprehensive study done by the DWD's Office of Economic Advisors illustrates the severity of this gap. By 2020, the state will be short 5,625 RN's. That number will continue to climb to 22,807 by 2035. This shortage is caused by both a growing demand for nurses and a supply shortage. The aging labor pool will increase the number of retirements among current RN's while the general population ages, increasing demand for RN's to care for older adults.
While many industries will be facing the problems associated with an aging workforce, the healthcare industry is unique in that demand for their services will increase as a result of this phenomenon.
Nurses are paid, on average, over $25 per hour in our area and there are several local institutions that offer nursing programs. Find out more about Registered Nurses in this month's Occupation Profile. Back to top

The goal of the project is to supply employers in the healthcare industry the highly skilled and competent workforce needed to fill current and projected job openings. Did You Know: Disability IS Diversity? - Traditionally, workplace diversity has focused on race and gender, but in more recent years this concept has evolved to include a much wider range of attributes, including disability. Disability is a unique diversity category that crosses
all racial, gender, education, and socioeconomic lines. People with disabilities account for over 5.5% of those employed nationwide (American Community Survey). While the precise percentage varies among sectors, individuals with disabilities represent an important segment of every organization's diverse workforce. Click HERE to read entire article.
