Cool Girls Celebrates National Mentoring Month

January was a very important month for our organization as we celebrated National Mentoring Month, a movement created so that communities can work together to increase the number of mentors and to assure brighter futures for our young people.
Our Cool Sisters program is our one-to-one mentoring program that matches adult female volunteers with Cool Girls to provide long-term friendship, personal support and to reinforce positive decision-making. The program acts as the binding force for all of our programs, keeping girls connected to our support network even if they move from our service areas or age out of our high school programs. During January, we asked our Cool Sisters what it's like to be a mentor and why it is so beneficial to our girls. To read their great responses, click here.
Why is mentoring so important?
-Mentoring helps prevent substance abuse and reduce negative youth behaviors
-Mentoring promotes positive social attitudes and relationships
-Mentored youth tend to trust their parents more and communicate better with them
-Mentored youth have a better chance of going on to higher education and better attitudes toward school
-Mentors help improve a young person's self-esteem
Interested in becoming a Cool Sister? Contact our Cool Sisters Coordinator, Jasmine Nelson, at j.nelson@thecoolgirls.org.

Cool Girls Enjoyed Their Annual Holiday Shopping Extravaganza
Saturday, December 8th, 2012 - McNair Discovery Learning Academy
On Saturday, December 8th, 2012, more than 190 Cool Girls ages 7-14 attended our Annual Holiday Shopping Extravaganza - a day designed to reward participants for their attendance and positive behavior in Cool Girls Club. The girls had the opportunity to "shop" in more than 10 different "stores" including Cool Boutique and Bath and Body. Besides shopping, the attendants enjoyed a performance from the Hope-Hill Elementary Cool Girls, dance lessons, arts and crafts, a photo booth, lunch and raffle prizes.
"'I am thankful I got to attend Holiday Shopping! It was my favorite event of the year," said Keisha, 4th grader.
We would like to thank everyone who made this event possible, especially all of the cool volunteers and all of our cool sponsors:
T.J. Maxx, Kutak Rock, DoubleTree Hotel-Buckhed, Delta Sigma Theta, Honda Financial Services, SunTrust Bank, CDC, the Welfare Family, OMG Booth, McKenna Long & Alridge, AVON Cosmetics, Bank of America, For the Kid in All of Us, Ashley Timmons, American Roadhouse, Positive Adventures, Junior League and Banana Republic.

Hot Off the Press
On December 7, 2012, Cool Girls received the Ford Freedom Unsung Award at a ceremony held at Georgia Tech's Historic Academy of Medicine.Made possible by a grant from Ford Motor Company and in partnership with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (NCCHR), Ford Freedom Unsung salutes those who have positively impacted communities and whose achievements serve to enlighten and inspire others. What an honor!
Thank you to each individual who supported our 2012 End-of-The-Year Campaign. Your generosity enabled us to raise more than $3,500, funds that will go directly to our award-winning programs.
Students from Elon University just partnered with our organization and volunteered with us during their alternative winter break. They visited Girls Club and facilitated a session on bullying and healthy relationships skills. The girls absolutely loved seeing new faces!
February is Black History Month - during this month we would like to honor a very cool girl, Gabrielle Douglas. As you know, this 17-year-old became the first African American woman to win gold in the individual all-around gymnastics competition. She is definitely an inspiration to all Cool Girls and demonstrates that with hard work, anything is possible.

What do you like best about being involved with Cool Girls?
Since I heard about Cools Girls' mission to empower young girls to change the world, I knew I wanted to play a role in their empowerment. As an Girls Club volunteer, I have enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the students as they learn positive lessons (for example, social media etiquette and community service). Recently, I became a Cool Sister and I'm excited about getting to know each other more while helping her broaden her horizons.
What advice would you share with our Cool Girls?
Never stop learning. Never stop dreaming. Setbacks will come, but that doesn't mean your dreams are over. Reach for the stars -- the sky is the limit. Be all that you can be!
