Holiday Shopping Day 2012

Saturday, December 8th, 2012 - McNair Discovery Learning Academy

We are only a few days away from our annual Holiday Shopping Extravaganza! As you may know, the event will take place this Saturday, December 8th at McNair Discovery Learning Academy. Our shopping days are designed to reward girls for their participation and behavior. The girls will use their Cool Points, accrued throughout the year, to "purchase" items donated by individuals and businesses. In addition to shopping, the girls will enjoy dance lessons, and arts & crafts. We can't wait to celebrate the holidays with our girls.

We would like to send a special shout out to the cool corporations who have gone above and beyond to ensure that the girls have a fantastic day at the event: T.J. Maxx, Kutak Rock LLP, Honda Financial, SunTrust Bank,  AVON, Bank of America, American Roadhouse and DoubleTree Atlanta - Buckead Hotel!

Girls Club Ends a Wonderful Semester!

This is the last week of Girls Club and it has been a very cool semester filled with enriching lessons that the girls have deeply enjoyed. In the past few months, participants discussed self-esteem, empowerment, peer pressure, conflict resolution, bullying, and managing emotions. In Cool Fitness, girls participated in educational and interactive activities via the GoGirlGo! curriculum. One of their favorite activities was running a relay race while learning about the new food pyramid, "My Plate". In Cool Tech, community partners from Friday Girl, STEM 2 Success, and GA Tech facilitated sessions on science, math, computing, and responsible social networking.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers who assist and facilitate in Girls Club each week! We could not do it without you!

Cool Girls Celebrated the First Ever

International Day of the Girl!

Day of the Girl -  October 11

What is the Day of the Girl?

According to the United Nations, this annual girls' rights day will help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls' lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.

During this day, Cool Girls was highlighted on Café CNN, CNN En Espanol's morning show.  We are so proud to have been represented in the Latin American community. Laura, Cool Girls' staff, spoke about the challenges that girls face worldwide, the goals of this new day and of course, the importance of Cool Girls' programs in Atlanta. Miriam, 14, and Laura, 18, shared their experiences as Cool Girls and what they like best about our programs. Click here to watch the 5-minute interview (in Spanish).

On that day, we also held a celebration at one of our partner schools, Hope-Hill Elementary. Atlanta City Councilman, Kwanza Hall, visited the school and read the Day of the Girl Proclamation to the 40 girls who were present. Participants also learned about gender equality and discussed the challenges girls face in the our city. To end the celebration, our girls created their own "Empowerment" tote bags with positive messages about being a confident girl.  The girls wore the bags around their school and community with the purpose of spreading positive messages to other girls.  Click here to view photos from this October 11th.

Hot Off the Press

Georgia Gives Day is coming up! This Thursday, December 6th, we will celebrate the first ever GA Gives Day. The day provides an opportunity for everyone, in every corner of the state, to support the causes that make Georgia great! We encourage you to donate to our organization! Whether you have $10 or $1,000 to give, it all adds up. We also encourage you to spread the word! Please use hashtags #Gagivesday and #Clickifyoucare on Twitter. Click here to visit our profile and make a donation. All donations are tax-deductible!

Cool Girls has been selected as an honoree for the Ford Freedom Unsung Award. The award salutes and honors those who have positively impacted communities and whose achievements serve to enlighten and inspire others. We will be receiving the award this Friday, December 7th at a special reception.

We are excited to announce that the Walmart Foundation recently awarded $30,000 to Cool Girls. The funds will support Cool Girls Club which provides life-skills development to participants and also includes our Cool Fitness and Cool Tech programs.

THANK YOU to each individual who donated $5 or more during the first ever Giving Tuesday on November 27th. The purpose this new day was to celebrate and support charities in a season that often seems exclusively about spending money. We sincerely  thank you for choosing us as the charity of choice. There is still time to donate $5 towards our end-of-the-year campaign, please click here to do so.

Board Spotlight: Andrea Criste

Andrea Criste has been serving Cool Girls for over three years. She currently serves as the Board Co-Chair and always goes above and beyond to support our organization.  Andrea has over 37 years of experience working as a teacher, trainer, consultant, and administrator in non-profit organizations serving both under-resourced youth and those with special needs.  She holds an M.Ed in Special Education and an Educational Leadership Certificate and has served on several community and national non-profit youth serving boards.

What do you like best about being involved with Cool Girls?
The opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of a girl-serving organization whose mission I feel so passionate about is a real privilege. Volunteering at special Cool Girls events and seeing the girls' energy and happiness is a real joy for me!

What advice would you share with our Cool Girls?  I frequently share quotes with youth I work with to make a special point with them and challenge them to reflect on their own situation.  One that comes to mind that I would definitely share with our Cool Girls is one of my favorites from Oprah Winfrey..." It doesn't matter who you are or where you came from.  The ability to triumph begins with you...always."
