 Message from the Directors

"Amy Poehler said, "As you navigate through the rest of your life,  be open to collaboration. Other people and other people's ideas  are often better than your own. Find a group of people who  challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it  will change your life."  In reflecting upon these words, it only  seems natural to get excited about opportunities that allow us to  connect with other people and groups who are able to challenge  us  and help us grow.  Collaboration is the key behind MAGiC and  its  importance is seen in the degree of positive changes that are  accomplished when organizations work together.

In just about a month, the 3rd USA Science and Engineering  Festival will take place in our nation's capital and provide  yet another opportunity for all of us to appreciate the true power  of collaboration in action.  STEM organizations from across the  nation  will be traveling to Washington, DC on April 26th and  27th to present a wide range of STEM activities that will  (hopefully) help to inspire the thousands of youth that will be in  attendance.  Not  only will this be an amazing opportunity for the  children who are attending, but for the organizations that are  participating as  well.  Perhaps learning about other STEM groups  will inspire us, challenge us, and even change the way "we've  always done things."  The festival will be a great time to branch  out and make  new connections with people and STEM  organizations alike, and,  ultimately, will lead to better and  more effective programs for  girls in our region and across the  nation.

Girls' Empowerment Mission & Opening STEM Doors for Girls

Girls' Empowerment Mission (GEM) is a Living Classrooms Foundation program that serves at-risk teenage girls from Chesapeake High School in Baltimore MD.

Girls' Empowerment Mission is a program to empower high school girls from under served communities by providing opportunities and growth experiences that will enable them to become independent, self-sufficient, and confident young women. GEM is designed to address the needs of the girls it serves within a positive, nurturing and supportive environment. The curriculum includes cultural, recreational, social, educational, and professional opportunities, as well as mentoring, service to others, leadership training, financial literacy, and decision making skills. GEM helps these girls understand that while they cannot help where they come from, they can control where they are going. Girls' Empowerment Mission polishes their "gems" and when they complete the program, they sparkle and shine!  GEM consists of a three year curriculum from March of their freshman year to May of the senior year, GRADUATION!

This past February, GEM wrote and received a grant from The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools entitled "Opening STEM Doors for Girls." This direction was taken due to the underrepresentation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers.

- Girls first did research on this topic of the gender gap. They created PowerPoints on what they learned.

-They took a field trip to the Maryland Science Center. There they went to a Planetarium show called "Beyond Your Backyard Sky." They viewed an IMAX show called "Ring of Fire" about volcanoes. Then they visited the other exhibits in the Science Center.

-Three women from Whiting-Turner, a large construction company, visited at an after-school GEM activity. They shared their journeys and experiences of being a female in the world of engineering. They did an activity with the girls by dividing them into groups, giving each group a deck of cards, and telling them to build the tallest structure they could.

- GEM girls attended the "All Girls STEM Career Fair" at Bryn Mawr private school for girls. There they networked with employees of 34 high profile STEM companies while doing hands-on activities.

- GEM girls will visit Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab on April 1 to meet and shadow female scientists.

- GEM girls will view and discuss the Oscar nominated movie "Gravity" at an after-school activity. "Gravity" is due to be released on DVD on February 25, 2014.

- GEM girls will participate in an online survey to evaluate how their awareness of STEM careers has been raised.

For more information contact GEM Founder Debbi Weinberg by email or visit GEM's website.

Exploring STEM Careers During a Sleepover at the National Aquarium in Baltimore

Do you know what a necropsy is? Did you know the aquarium animals are fed restaurant grade food?  Over 30 girls from Southwest Academy Magnet School for Science and Engineering in Baltimore had the unique experience of sleeping overnight at the Baltimore Aquarium on March 7-8, 2014. The purpose of this trip was to expose the girls to the various STEM professions that can be found at the aquarium and the type of training that is required for these professions.  The evening began with the girls exploring the aquarium on their own.  With a visit to the Australia exhibit, which depicts a typical northern Australia river gorge, the girls were able to walk through the bottom of the gorge and get close to over 1,600 individual native animals representing 120 species, including freshwater crocodiles, turtles, fish, snakes, lizards, free-flying birds, and flying foxes.  A visit to the Dolphin Discover amphitheater gave the girls the opportunity to see the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins in action as they swam, flipped, and splashed through the 26 foot deep, 1,200,000 gallon tank.

The real fun began when the aquarium closed.  At that time, the girls were taken behind the scenes to observe the Dolphin Discovery Lab. The girls found out that a necropsy is an autopsy done on animals.  When an animal dies at the aquarium a necropsy must be performed to determine the cause of death.  They also learned that in order to maintain and care for the dolphins it requires a team of 13 marine mammal trainers, a director of marine mammal training, a director of animal programs, a marine mammal's team, a full time exhibits team, and a veterinary team.

During the classroom experience, the girls asked a variety of questions such as "how long do you need to go to school to become a marine biologist?" to "do dolphins have nose bleeds?"  They also found out that the Aquarium has an extensive volunteer program which starts with high school students.  Several internship programs and part-time jobs are available to college students.  The behind-the-scenes-tour continued with a tour of the shark tank from a catwalk, where you will find a large tooth sawfish swimming inches below your feet.  The girls were escorted to their sleeping areas next to the dolphins' observation tank.  In the morning, the girls were able to ask more questions from the director of marine mammal training.  She told the girls that if there is something that you really want to do, you must stick with it.  She explained that while she was in college, she had an internship at the Aquarium.  After graduating from college, she volunteered at the aquarium for several years before she was offered a part-time position.  After working a few years part-time, she was offered a full time position.  The girls left the Aquarium with a better understanding of the various career opportunities available and an understanding that with determination and commitment you can reach your dreams.

A special thank you to our principal, Karen Barnes and all of the teachers, Valerie Hawkins, Claudia Johnson, Elizabeth Kreutzer, Sheila Luechtefeld,  Linda McClelland, and Michele Natale, who volunteered their time to make this experience a success.  An exciting and wonderful time was had by all.
