Welcome to the Summer 2014 edition of the Library IDEA, Monterey Public Library's e-newsletter, which keeps you informed about how the Library has been working to fulfill its mission "To Inspire, Delight, and Educate All".

Inspires...
Donald Davis Stories for Adults will present storyteller Donald Davis on Tuesday, July 22, 7 p.m. in the Library Community Room. His stories are drawn from true life experiences, and are both heartwarming and hilarious.

For ages 16-up. Tickets may be obtained in advance only at the Help Desk - $15 or 1 free with your valid MPL or PGPL card.

The Library's award-winning Stories for Adults series has inspired a generation of listeners for 27 years.

Delights...
The Library's 1849 Society will enjoy a delicious, complimentary chocolate tasting at Lula's on Tuesday, June 17, 4 -6 p.m. Members of the 1849 Society, named in honor of California's first public library, established in Monterey in 1849, gain membership by donating $1,849 to the Library's Endowment Fund. Non-members may purchase tickets for the Lula's event, but $30 tickets for this limited-seating event will sell out very quickly.
Educates...
Just for Teens, your Summer Reading Theme is Claws to Read.

The Summer Reading Kick-Off Party is June 7 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Come in, get your claws (nails) done, enjoy the carnival atmosphere going on in the library and get signed up to participate.

Teen Clubs will continue through the summer along with some other fun programs including cooking, crafting, free yogurt from MYO and a field trip to the Mirror Maze on Cannery Row.

Look for specific information and dates for clubs and programs on: http://www.monterey.org/library/Teens/TeenEvents.aspx or contact Eboni Harris at [email protected] or call at (831) 646-2094.
All...!
The Library will be closed Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6 while the new cost-saving, web-based combined catalog and borrowing system is installed and tested. The catalog screens will have a new look, but will function much like the current system now in use with a few new features. Certain information from the current system will no longer be available. For example, your existing reading history cannot be transferred. So, if you wish to save it, you must do so before July 3, by following these instructions. We expect a smooth transition from the old system to the new one, and we apologize for the inconvenience of interrupted service to you over the 4th of July weekend.
A Message from the Acting Library Director...
We have a busy summer ahead of us at the Monterey Public Library with much to look forward to. The events calendar is full of exciting programs for children, teens, and adults; a new library catalog and borrowing system will be rolled out in July, and by the end of the summer, when you have a question for staff, you will have the option to text it to us by phone. Summer is a time of transition at California's first public library: in May we bid a fond farewell to Kim Bui-Burton, Library Director for the past ten years, in June we greet Kristine Russell, a new Youth Librarian, and in July we look forward to welcoming a new Library Director. As faces and names change, the tradition of impeccable customer service from dedicated staff, and tremendous support from library customers of all ages remains. Our summer reading theme is "Paws to Read." I hope that each of you, young and old alike can pause during your hectic summer to slip into the pages of a book - whether in your hand, on your headphones, or your digital device - and read something that truly 'Inspires, Delights, and Educates,' and makes you smile.
