Over the course of the last 18 months The Villages Golf and Country Club community has accomplished a variety of objectives with the intention of reducing the amount of water used to irrigate landscaped areas, as well as water being used for residential purposes.

Here are examples of their efforts:   

• A number of turf reduction projects have been completed, converting more than 170,000 square feet of turf to low water-use plants and drip irrigation. Another 100,000 square feet is targeted this upcoming year.
• Five aquatic ponds have been converted from potable water supply to reclaimed water supply.
• A $2.5 million upgrade to the community's irrigation system is underway, partly funded through rebates from the water district. As a result of these rebates, they will be replacing more than 52,000 heads and rotors, installing 111 flow meters and master valves and replacing 164 controllers with new, efficient models.
• At the community's restaurants, water is only served upon request.
• They are currently evaluating low-mow grass alternatives that require a fraction of the water normal turf requires. 

As you can see, the Villages Community is overhauling their water use and finding ways to reduce water consumption.
