Hi, January has brought beautiful days and cooler evenings to San Pancho. It so great to see that a leatherback turtle has made a nest here. Turtles are being released almost every night and when looking out on the horizon you might catch a whale breaching. San Pancho is a very special pueblo as you can see in the following articles.
I look forward to bringing you all the happenings in our community, and share with you, the joy of living in San Pancho.
Please feel free to post your comments, share your photos, and report any news about San Pancho on our Facebook page.
You can contact me directly at kim@sanpancholife.com, if you would like to talk about advertising or submit a written article.
I look forward to talking to you about San Pancho and encourage you to come by the office, at #50 Tercer Mundo.
Saludos!

Hilltop Refugio |
Hilltop Refugio was established by George & Loretta Leavitt to help large animals like horses, donkeys and mules who are ill, malnourished or being mistreated in the Jaltemba Bay area. George's love of horses and his love of Mexico have been combined for over 35 years, and forming a large animal group has always been his dream.
While Hilltop Refugio is still "a dream in the works," a 3-acre site located on a hill in La Peñita was allocated for the project in December 2012. George and other volunteers are already starting to raise necessary funds and working with owners to surrender their unwanted animals.
Other animals, like the 7 shown here (8 in this herd have already died of starvation), will likely have to be purchased in order to save their lives. As soon as enough funds are raised, the animals will be acquired and stables will be constructed. Once healthy enough for transport, the rescue animals will be moved to this location where they will be fed, receive much needed medical care and get the love and attention they deserve. Once the refuge is in place, the general public will be welcome to visit the site and see and help care for these animals.
The Jaltemba Equine Education Project (J.E.E.P.) was created by George Leavitt and Donna Brownfield, and will operate in partnership with Hilltop Refugio. Their goals are to: * Help equine owners understand and realize the full value of their animals and why it is to their benefit to keep them healthy; * Educate children about why large farm animals, such as equines, are important to this agricultural area; * Create opportunities for children to spend quality time with equines; * Help the owners of these animals understand that equines can be enthusiastic and willing partners if only given the chance.
George & Loretta Leavitt have lived in La Peñita de Jaltemba for 35 years. George has been a member of the Federación Mexicana de Charrería, A.C. for over 30 years and has built strong relationships with farmers and ranchers via community horse rides, and charro and rodeo events. Donna Brownfield has been involved with horses for over 50 years. She has been a student of natural horsemanship for 20 years and is currently involved in teaching equine communication techniques to students. Donna and her husband, Jerry, spend winter months in La Peñita and the rest of the year in Eagle Point, Oregon.

Back From The Brink
|
In the dark of night on November 28th, 2012 an Eastern Pacific Leatherback crawled out of the sea, nearly undetected, and left her eggs buried deep in the warm sand of San Pancho. This was only the second time in 15 years that a Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) has nested on this shore, and sadly..... it may very well be the last time. Ever. Most scientists agree that Leatherbacks will be completely extinct in the Eastern Pacific in the next 10-20 years. In 1985 there were an estimated 110,000 female Leatherbacks. Now estimates stand at less than 1,000. That's a 99% loss of population in less than 30 years. This nest represents this species' last desperate grasp at survival as it slides rapidly and unavoidably into extinction. Considering that these creatures have circumnavigated the globe for the past 200 million years-- that loss is brutally quick. And brutally final. Survival techniques that have worked since before the time of the dinosaurs no longer work. The pressures of over-fishing, drowning in nets, entanglement in trash, ingestion of plastics, boat collisions, pollution, beach erosion and climate change have happened so fast the Leatherbacks have been unable to adapt. When (and if) these eggs hatch --those hatchlings must survive for 15 years before they are old enough to reproduce. The facts are sobering and depressing, indeed, but on the other hand we can choose to view this nest as a beautiful gift and an incredible opportunity to catch a last glimpse of one of nature's amazing miracles. The nest should hatch sometime between today and February 10th and we are asking everyone on the beach to help us watch for the hatchlings. Please call Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde anytime 24/7 if you see the nest hatching. Landline: 311 258-4100 or Cell 322 202 1576. Tiny Seeds=Big Nutrition
|
Have you tried chia seeds yet? Though chia seeds are fairly new to the nutritional scene, chia seeds are not a new food. The Aztecs and Mayans have used these little guys as a staple food source for hundreds of years. In fact, Aztec and Mayan warriors raved that they could sustain themselves for consecutive days of travel with only a pouch of chia seeds and a container of water. Lucky for us, this traditional food wisdom has trickled over to this stretch of the Mexican Pacific. Please allow me to introduce you to chia seeds! Chia seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch that is a treat to your body in many ways. They are naturally high in vitamins, minerals, nutrients, healthy fats and proteins, offering a nutritional satisfaction to your body that is truly impressive. These seeds are also very rich in vitamin C, calcium and antioxidants. Those of you looking for increased energy and weight loss will be particularly happy to hear that chia seeds suppress your appetite and increase your energy, allowing you to shed excess pounds easily and without hunger. Why? Chia seeds keep you satisfied and nourished in three ways:1) They absorb liquid. This makes them bulk up and you feel as though you have eaten more than you really have.2) They digest slowly. This means you will feel fuller and more satisfied for longer. By eating less your body can also devote less energy to digestion and more energy to enjoying life!3) They are high in nutrition. The seeds nourish your body with a spectrum of nutrients, which keeps you satisfied. When you have your nutritional basis covered your body will feel balanced and be much less likely to crave everything in sight! Chia seeds can help you say goodbye crazy to food cravings. Research has shown that when eaten on a regular basis, these chia seeds can also increase your metabolism and help you burn fat faster. Sounds pretty good right? These tiny seeds are a true superfood. Ready to give them a try? You can find chia seeds at our local farmer's markets (Fridays in Sayulita and Sundays in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle), as well as in the bulk section of the Mega grocery store in Bucerias. How to use them? Soak chia seeds in water for at least 15 minutes. Chia seeds on their own don't taste like much but I highly recommend adding them to smoothies, soups, cereals and more. Check out my recipe for a chia seed energy drink here. http://junglegirlhealth.com/blog/2012/04/chia-seed-energy-drink By Tamara Jacobi
