Gastronomic Street Celebration November 2
|
|
Dia de Los Muertos
|
"Day of the Dead - is primarily viewed as a Mexican holiday, this holiday is celebrated joyfully, and though it occurs at the same time as Halloween, the mood of The Day of the Dead is much lighter, with the emphasis on celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased, rather than fearing evil or malevolent spirits. The origins of the celebration of The Day of the Dead in Mexico can be traced back to the indigenous peoples of Latin America, such as the Aztecs & Mayans. When the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Central America in the 15th century they were appalled at the indigenous pagan practices, and in an attempt to convert the locals to Catholicism moved the popular festival to the beginning of November to coincide with the Catholic All Saints and All Souls days. The Spanish combined their custom of Halloween with the similar Mesoamerican festival, creating The Day of the Dead. Plans for the festival are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods that will be offered to the dead. During the period of October 31 and November 2 families usually clean and decorate the graves. Some wealthier families build altars in their homes, but most simply visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with offerings. These include wreaths of marigold, which are thought to attract the souls of the dead toward the offerings, and toys brought for dead children (los angelitos, or little angels) and bottles of tequila, mezcal, pulque or atole for adults. A common symbol of the holiday is the skull, which celebrants represent in masks called calacas. Sugar skulls, inscribed with the names of the deceased on the forehead, are often eaten by a relative or friend. Other special foods for El Día de los Muertos includes Pan de Muertos (bread of the dead), a sweet egg bread made in many shapes, from plain rounds to skulls and rabbits.

Los Santos Restaurant and Bar
|
With the new season approaching quickly we are happy to see our local businesses up and running again and we are also excited to welcome the new. Los Santos Restaurant and Bar is a new edition to the family and we welcome them with open arms. Allison Pastor or as some may know her "La Chaparra" and her boyfriend Gabriel Macias AKA " El Monchis" have designed an exciting and fun new restaurant with a full bar and an array of food with hints of flavor from around the world for tourists and locals to enjoy.
Allison lived in San Pancho in the late 90's and then traveled between here and her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana until later deciding in 2010 she would move permanently to San Pancho, Nayarit. Throughout her many years traveling through Mexico and the state of Nayarit she learned a lot of the local culture and culinary secrets of the area that she looks forward to sharing with the people through their restaurant. Gabriel on the other hand is from Mexico but traveled throughout Europe and north America picking up new strengths in his cooking by learning from and working with chefs from around the world. Gabriel comes from a culinary family who have always inspired him to stay true to his Mexican roots and cook with local ingredients and local dishes but from his experience of cooking he finds a way to make each dish unique and his own. Together the two make an excellent team combining the flavors of Allison's New Orleans background and Gabriel's individual way of cooking and they have created an eclectic menu of food and drinks that is sure enough to get anyone's taste buds popping!
Los Santos has an ambiance not quite like any other. As you walk in you feel immediatly welcomed with the friendly staff and warm atmosphere. The name Los Santos came from an idea the couple had by recognizing St. Francis of Assisi ( San Francisco ) and making him a place to be joined by all other saints. St. Francis is commemorated in the restaurant standing in front of a surfboard and standing upon the shell of an Olive Ridly turtle shell. This represents St. Francis combined with two strong staples of San Pancho surfing and the turtle rescue. Los Santos has incorporated all the offerings that our town has to give in one place for all of us to enjoy. They will also be providing cooking classes and turtle talks on Thursdays followed by walks down the beach to help save our Olive Ridlys!
Los Santos opened yesterday on All Saints Day and was blessed by Father Ignacio , representing the good fortune this restaurant has to come. It is now open to the public from Wednesday-Monday from 12-closing. Come and enjoy one of Gabriel's specialty margaritas, delicious fare, a game of billiards and your favorite sports game on the large flat screen TV. Don't forget to bring your favorite saint to add to their " Wall of Saints" and receive a free cocktail. A disfrutar!

Back From The Brink

It's Hatching Season!!! The beautiful time of year when all of our hard work is finally paying off. The time of year when thousands of newborn Olive Ridleys will be released on the beach at night to start their amazing journeys. Not many sights are as incredible and touching as seeing these tiny creatures making their way to the sea, following some ancient internal compass that guides them fearlessly into the vast dark ocean. Weighing just 28 grams, it seems impossible that they can even make it past the surf, much less all the way out to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And yet, despite their size, they are amazingly strong swimmers, traveling about 15 miles a day without resting until they reach the Pacific Current. For the turtle volunteers, it is always such a bittersweet sight to watch the tiny hatchlings disappear into the sea.... Bitter knowing that only 1 in 600 will survive to adulthood but also sweet knowing that this cycle of life has been repeated for millions of years and that we get to be a small part of that miracle. God speed little ones, we will see you again in 2027!!! Hatchling releases are performed every night just north of the alley between 6:45 and 7pm. Always free and always amazing. Join us!
Or you can see our day to day work on Facebook at: San Pancho Turtles https://www.facebook.com/pages/San-Pancho-Turtles
Siempre libre y siempre sorprendente. Downward Dog Yoga Philosophy
from a Yellow Lab
|
Downward dog anyone? The benefits of yoga are significant, both for your mind and body. Physically, yoga can help you improve flexibility, release stress and tension, strengthen your muscles and bones and even help you lose weight. Psychologically and spiritually, yoga offers endless opportunity. In fact, yoga is such a fundamental part of a healthy lifestyle that even our fury four legged friends seem to practice yoga regularly. In fact, I would say that my dog is a perfect illustration of some basic yogic philosophy. Here are three yoga essentials that my "oh so wise" yellow lab would like to share. Breathe. There's nothing more satisfying then a breath that is so deep it shakes the jowls. Don't be afraid to really let it out and make some noise. Who cares if it makes you slobber? Deep breathing is one of the great pleasures of life. Stretch. Wherever, whenever, there's always time for a good stretch. Downward dog, upward dog, child's pose and dead bug (or happy baby) are some favorites. Don't be afraid to spread your legs or stick your butt up in the air, it's natural and it's good for you! Be here now. As soon as dawn breaks, the tail is wagging and the day is off to be a great start. Every day is an exciting new day! It is doesn't matter what happened yesterday, or what's going to happen tomorrow. Let's enjoy today! Which toy should I bring to the beach? Which squirrel should I chase? Life is so much fun, right now! Whether you're a hardcore yogi or are simply toying with the idea of giving yoga a try, San Pancho is a great spot to find your yoga groove. Had a bad yoga experience? Don't give up! There are range of unique styles that offer something for everyone. Many San Pancho locals frequent our wonderful local yoga studio, http://www.el-estar.org El Estar, which offers a collection of fantastic teachers and classes of levels. At the http://www.tailwindjunglelodge.com Tailwind Jungle Lodge we also host a variety of yoga retreats and classes. We're loving our new yoga platform! Please come and help us break it in this winter. Local teacher Mary Bolton and I will be hosting a Natural Nourishment Yoga, Holistic Nutrition and Adventure Retreat, Feb. 16 - 22nd, 2013. Locals are invited to join and yes, my dog will be there too. Ready to get your health back on track? Check out my free guide to start listening to your body.

5 rock-star birds of San Pancho!
These are birds that are not only amazingly beautiful to look at, some of them are also difficult to find and something they all have in common is that all of them are species of conservation concern internationally: Painted Bunting: with their vivid fusion of blue, green, yellow, and red, male Painted Buntings seem to have flown straight out of a child's coloring book. They are seed feeders and can be found amongst other Bunting species in agricultural feeds with sorghum. Varied Bunting: males are also amazingly colorful with blues, purples and red. This species inhabits mostly in Mexico and Arizona. Like our rockstar above is found in agricultural fields and grassy areas. Yellow-breasted Chat: this is a more elusive species that is found amongst brushy areas. Although not as colorful as the buntings its contrast of yellow, grey and white makes hard-to-find species quite a treat. | Elegant Trogan
|
Elegant Trogon: as its name says, this elegant bird displays the colors of the Mexican flag; these birds are found in dense, humid and shady forests where they can sit still and watch the world go by. Reddish Egret: is a rare visitor to our area; however this egret often perches amongst other herons by the palm-trees at the beach and can be recognized for its reddish neck and bill pinkish at the base with black tip. These are some of the bird species that make our town a potential site for bird conservation. All of them belong to a list of protected species called the http://www.fws.gov/birdhabitat/Grants/NMBCA/BirdList.shtm Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act 5 aves estrellas de rock de San Pancho!
