Mercado del Pueblo Grand Opening
|
Please join the Mercado del Pueblo for the grand opening of their fourth season in Sayulita on November 2nd. The Mercado is the only farmer's market in Nayarit and was begun in partnership with vendors from Sayulita and San Pancho with the goal of bringing local organic and natural products directly to consumers. Opening day will feature live music from the Tsunamis, free Pan de Muertos and, of course, amazing food.
The Mercado began as a venue to bring the farm to the table, allowing local growers to sell directly to consumers and providing an opportunity for consumers to get to know where their food is coming from and how it is grown. Since its inception, the market has increased the amount of local, organic growing happening in the area and continues to encourage growers to keep their products close to home. This year, the market features four new organic growers, all focusing their products on the farmer's market audience. Over the years and based on consumer requests, the market has grown to include artisan foods, vegan and glutton free products, natural body care items and cleaning products, herbal and homemade medicines and local plants. This year, the market will also carry organic meats, raw milk and milk substitutes and materials, such as organic fertilizer, geared towards helping us all grow our own products. Finally, the market also features community non-profit organizations, such as Entre Amigos.
Looking to learn about local products? Eat healthier? Expand your food horizons? Or, maybe just get to socialize with other community members and listen to music.....this is the place for you. The Mercado is open throughout the growing season (November-April) on Fridays, 10am-2pm on Calle Mirimar, just of Revolution. For more information or to get weekly updates about the market, please visit the Facebook page Mercado del Pueblo.

Back From The Brink
|
Turtle season 2012 is still going strong, and as of right now we have recorded 1,234 nests on San Pancho Beach and Playa Questos. In fact, there have been more nests laid on the beaches in the past 3 months than were laid for the first nine years of the turtle program combined. (1991-1999) While those statistics make us turtle people really, really happy, they also make us really really TIRED!! Luckily we have a great group of volunteers who literally work around the clock to make sure everything runs (fairly) smoothly. Our volunteers this year have come from Australia, Mexico, USA, Canada, Ireland, Chile, Germany and England. These volunteers pay all their own expenses, work hard in all weather and all hours and most of the time get no recognition for their efforts-but without them the turtle program would not exist, so if you see our volunteers around town, please show them a little love. This year with 100% volunteer labor we expanded our box nursery to accommodate 10,000 more eggs and we expanded our beach nursery to accommodate 15,000 more eggs. Even with those expansions, the box nursery filled to capacity twice and we were forced to use the overflow nursery on the beach. When the overflow nursery got swamped by waves at the end of August, the box nursery was completely full and we were left with the problem of where to put all the incoming nests. We could not leave them on the beach because the entire beach was inundated with salt water, and oddly enough, saltwater is lethal to freshly laid turtle eggs. We were forced to bury the nests high up on the beach, just in front of the houses at the north end. Those nests are all hatching this week and hatching with great success. We would like to ask anyone who walks the north end of the beach to please be on the lookout for sea turtle hatchlings making their way to the ocean. If you see a hatchling on the sand please pick it up and carry it to the beginning of the moist sand at the water's edge and let it crawl into the sea on its own. Hatchlings have absolutely no natural defenses and they cannot bite you, sting you or harm you in any way, so they are safe for you to handle. You can call Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde any time night or day to report hatchlings or adult turtles (or poachers) on the beach and we will send someone right out. The landline number is 311 258 4100 and the cell number is 322 303 1576. Thank you for your help!!! You can follow us on Facebook at SanPanchoTurtles or on our website at www.project-tortuga.org

Green is the color of life.
Green is a fuel for life.
Green is a way of life.
Green inside, outside, upside down! It's easy to be inspired by greenness! After the summer rains San Pancho is radiantly green and beautiful. Here are a few reasons to love and embrace the simply philosophies green.
Green life surrounds us in a comforting embrace, a reassurance that we are never alone; there is life all around us. Green empowers us, reminding us of the magic and potential of life. Yet, at the same time green teaches us calm and tranquility, a reminder of the need to be present and get slow. Let us revel in the sway of the green palm trees of the jungle, do sun salutations beneath a canopy of green and stand up paddleboard alongside a glowing green coastline.
Green also nourishes us! From kale to seaweed, they are truly one of Mother Nature's gifts for us to enjoy. Greens spring out of the ground and reach up to the sky, offering a contagious and uplifting, energy. Put these on your plate and this energy will be easily assimilated into your body. The nutritional benefits of greens are endless and the saying "if you're green inside you're clean inside" is one of my personal mantras. Greens are beyond doubt one of the cornerstones of good health. Read more about my green health inspiration at www.junglegirlhealth.com
Green is a model of sustainable life. Green flora projects a silent, harmonious energy that flows gracefully and synergistically through nature's cycles. Why not emulate this rhythm and harmony in our own lives? Green gives us the essence of human life-pure, clean oxygen. Take a minute to marvel at how you are naturally able to give CO2 in return! What a beautiful symbiotic relationship! We will always have an impact the places in which we live, but why not try to give back and perpetuate the cycle of life.
Let me support you with adding some green nourishment to your life!

Birding With Luis |
Connecting schools Over Birds across the continent!
Just like migratory birds travel from place to place across the continent dispersing seeds, transporting nutrients and making ecological connections across habitats they also have the ability and the power of connecting people, how amazing!
Think about this possibility for a second: imagine kids from different cultures, from different countries across the continent with apparently totally different lives having the opportunity of learning about migratory birds through other kids elsewhere with the same bird species creating not only a link and learning experience from the natural world but also making friends and learning about other cultures and perhaps other languages.
Guess what? It is already happening and is going to happen for kids in San Pancho pretty soon!

Casa Kalea
Reserve this Rental in San Pancho
for your Next Vacation!
Casa Kalea was built in the spirit of providing a welcoming, relaxing, and peaceful home for its guests. We named the house after our first Grandchild, Ruby Kalea. Kalea is Hawaiian for joy or clarity, and it's our hope that all who stay here will feel joy and peace.
Newly constructed in 2005, the house features two guest bedrooms and bathroom; plus a master bedroom on the top floor; a spacious master bathroom & walk-in closet; a large and fully-equipped kitchen which opens up to the relaxing living space; a patio pool with charcoal grill; a refrigerator and palapa bar on the top floor, houskeeper, and a gardener.
Children are oh-so welcome! Some of our favorite moments are spent enjoying tropical breezes, evening drinks, tapas, and sunsets from the palapa, while awaiting another day of adventures on San Pancho's soft white sand beach, strolling along the town's cobblestone streets, and eating fresh fish in the town's restaurants.
Casa Kalea sits next to Casa el Izote, a two-bedroom hacienda with full kitchen, pool, and upstairs patio. Renting the two homes together is an ideal venture for those wishing to gather many family and friends for a Mexican vacation.
