Get Ready for January!
JANUARY CHECKLIST

HS SENIORS
  • HS guidance departments typically require a list of schools to which you plan to apply Jan 1 early in Dec., so they can prepare. Give guidance counselors a list of your backups ASAP.
  •
  • If you applied to any schools Early Decision I or Early Action, begin contingency planning NOW, in case you get deferred or denied. Make sure your "back-ups" are slightly less selective your ED school (if you did not get in with ED advantage, you will not get into a similar school RD). This is where the Betterton Evaluator™ is a godsend!
  •
  • Visit and interview (if allowed) at any school to which you apply in January; let them know you visited. Demonstrated interest is especially critical if you apply without ED II; admissions officers can easily "read" an unenthusiastic shotgun approach.
  • V
  • Strongly consider applying Early Decision II for a January school that offers it (ED2 is becoming more popular and you may be at a disadvantage by ruling out this option).
  •
  • Start supplementary essays NOW for back-up schools. If you get deferred or denied, it will feel good to know these essays are at least started.

 HS JUNIORS

  • Prepare for SAT/ACT this winter. if you need a tutor, we can suggest great resources in Morris, Essex, Union, Somerset, or online.
  •
  • Begin developing your college list. We can advise you using our licensed college list tool, the Betterton Evaulator™, in early January.
  •
  • Plan to visit colleges over winter and spring breaks.
