Plant of the Month: Baptisia australis
Baptisia australis, commonly known as blue wild indigo or blue false indigo, is a perennial that is a member of the pea family. It can be found growing wild at the borders of woods, along streams or in open meadows. Additional common names are indigo weed, rattleweed, rattlebush and horsefly weed. The common name "blue false indigo" is derived from the plant being used as a substitute for the superior dye-producing plant Indigofera tinctoria
The plant may attain a mature size of 4-5' high and 3-4' wide. Baptisia has an upright, shrubby form and offers a long season of interest with flower spikes, seed pods and foliage that is almost never bothered by pests or disease. It is considered to be a desirable plant in the garden due to its deep blue to violet spring flowers, the attractive light green compound leaves, and also for the somewhat unusual oblong fruits that emerge in the late summer.
Baptisia australis grows best in lime-free, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Like other members of the genus, it has a very deep taproot, which makes it quite difficult to move once planted. It thrives in full sun and requires water only in times of low rainfall. The leaves tend to drop early in the fall, but this may be avoided by cutting the dead stems as they die back.
If you're looking to add interest and outstanding color to your landscape, consider Baptisia australis.

Memorial Day
Most of us think of Memorial Day as a three-day weekend kicking of the summer season. But we shouldn't lose sight of what it really stands for. Memorial Day is a federal holiday where men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces are remembered.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day was extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military service.
Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers all of those who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain.
So this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
