Winter Weather Comes Early!

March 2013 Snow

The official start of winter isn't until December 21st but we've already seen some significant snow fall totals. Many were caught off guard by the first storm, since they were predicting about 1-2 inches, yet on December 8th we saw much higher totals. Cecil County had the most with 10.3 inches, according to WeatherWorks, the meteorological service used by Akehurst. Harford County saw 8 inches, Baltimore county saw 5-7 inches, while Anne Arundel County received less
than 2 inches.

Then on December 10th
a quick moving snow event impacted our area again, with most areas getting between 1-3 inches of accumulation. With the temperatures dropping below freezing at nights, our crews have been busy conducting ice checks and salting as needed to keep our clients safe.

During any snowstorm be sure to clean off your bushes and small ornamental trees to keep them from being permanently damaged from the snow. Do this with a broom when the snow is fluffy and be gentle. Don't use a shovel or other heavy tool that is hard and can break off foliage and scrape bark.   Brush it off early so the snow doesn't have a chance to settle and get heavy/wet

or freeze solid.

Akehurst Renovates Interiorscape at VA Hospital

Akehurst's award winning Interiorscape Department was recently selected to perform an interiorscape renovation of an Interior Atrium at the VA Medical Center in Baltimore.  The atrium had previously been neglected for three years as the building had undergone some renovations of its own.

Over 530 tropical plants with 19 tropical trees and 40 yards of mulch were used in this planting. All of the materials had to be carted through the hospital by hand and transported up three levels through an elevator.  It took the installation team a week to complete the task.  "We could not have done such a great job without a fantastic team!" said John Akehurst, who designed the interior plant setting.  In addition, Akehurst Landscape Service, Inc. was contracted to provide the weekly care of the new plants.  It's quite an honor to make the hospital aesthetically pleasing for our military heroes.

Pruning

December Landscape Tips

Leaf Removal

If you haven't already done it, be sure to rake up those leaves.   Letting them sit too long can damage the grass underneath. Keeping your lawn clean can improve the chances of winter survival and minimize damage. Turf that is left covered with leaves or lots of pine needles face a lack of air, light and will often succumb to ice damage in a weakened state.

Dormant Pruning

The winter months are a good time to prune roses, Japanese Maples, ornamental and fruit trees, as well as cutting back ornamental grasses and perennials. Dormant pruning is done during the winter months when the plants are in a dormant stage. This has several advantages. It is less stressful on the plant, the cuts will heal faster and it is easier to see disease or damage.   The effects of this winter pruning are especially visible in the spring because it can foster more vibrant blooms from flowering trees as well as more numerous and healthier fruits from fruit-bearing trees.

Till Your Garden

Be sure to till your gardens before the ground freezes. This will get you off to a good start in the spring.  Vegetable gardens and flower beds need good tilling to loosen the soil ready for new planting. This operation should be done at the end of the autumn to avoid having too much to do in spring.
