Greg Stacho Accepts Position on MNLA Scholarship Committee

Already a board member for the Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association, Account Manager Greg Stacho recently accepted a position on the MNLA Scholarship Committee.

The Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association sponsors academic scholarships to students pursuing an education in the field of landscape/ornamental horticulture. Currently, MNLA offers two scholarships for $2500 each to students with status of Junior, Senior or Grad Student, enrolled in horticulture or landscape architecture degree program. The committee reviews all applications and decides on the two winners.

North Bend Elementary School Honors Former Principal

For their class project, 5th graders at North Bend Elementary School planted a tree in memory of former principal Steven Hardy.

Mr. Hardy, who passed away last June, served in Harford County Public schools for more

than 40 years.

The tree, donated by Akehurst, is a Star Magnolia that was planted in the front of the school. The photo below shows

Landscape Makeover 2013-1
2013 Landscape Give-Away Winner

In May we announced the winners of the $2000 landscape give-away sponsored by 95.1 ShineFM at this year's Maryland Home and Garden Show--Jan and Jack Bowersox of Jarrettsville, MD.

For their project, they had Akehurst remove the existing timber planter and replace with similar new timbers. In addition, we dug a trench to install downspout and existing pipe from their sunroom to the woods area.

A special thanks to all our friends at 95.1 ShineFM sponsoring this contest!

Entrance to Playground Area

Plumtree Park Gets a New Look!

Akehurst has been working with the Town of Bel Air to give Plumtree Park a facelift. The town replaced aging playground equipment and contracted Akehurst to construct a paved path along the park's stream, new benches, updated lighting and more.

The structures were made using the proprietary StoneMakers process which allows our crews to mold concrete into virtually any shape.

"This was a very interesting project with stone curbing to keep the woodchips inside the play area, and boulders, stumps and logs for seats and tables. We pulled out all stops of creativity and artistry to bring this concept to reality!" said Bill Akehurst.

Check out this video of Julia Akehurst working on the stump seat pictured below:  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=552892178082262&l=6747117960206825068

Using the StoneMakers process we can make retaining walls, waterfalls, walkways, patios and much more using solid concrete.

Floral Flag
 Floral Flag

In 2002 this floral flag was created in Lompac, CA. The 2002 floral flag was 740 feet wide and 390 feet high and maintained the proper flag dimensions as described in executive order #10834. This flag was 6.65 acres and was the first floral flag to be planted with 5 pointed stars, each star was 24 feet in diameter and each stripe 30 feet wide. This flag was estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants with 4-5 flower stems each for a total of more than 2 million flowers. It's life span was approximately 3 months and went to seed in early August 2002.
