Mulch

Benefits of Mulching

One of the most common tasks performed during the spring is the installation of a new layer of mulch around trees and in flower beds. Mulch provides an aesthetic value to your property by giving your beds a uniform, well cared for look, but it provides other benefits as well:

  • Helps maintain soil moisture. Evaporation is reduced, and the need for watering can be minimized.
  • Helps control weeds. A 2 to 4-inch layer of mulch will reduce the germination and growth of weeds.
  • Mulch serves as nature's insulating blanket. Mulch keeps soils warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
  • Many types of mulch can improve soil aeration, structure (aggregation of soil particles), and drainage over time.
  • Some mulches can improve soil fertility.
  • A layer of mulch can inhibit certain plant diseases.

Our crews are busy installing mulch all across our service area. If your property needs a fresh layer of mulch to start the spring season off, give us a call!

Add Container Gardens To Your Landscape

Container gardens have become a very popular part of landscaping, and for good reason. There are many benefits to container gardens.

The biggest benefit is mobility. Containers can be placed just about anywhere, and they can be moved to change the look of your landscape without much effort. They can be placed in highly used areas during their prime and then removed or replaced after the flowers are spent.

Container gardens can be grown where traditional gardens are not possible including apartment balconies, small courtyards, decks, patios or even areas with poor soil. They are also a great solution for those with limited mobility or time to care for a large garden.

Adding some containers with bright flowers can add an instant landscaped look.  Place a well organized container garden to brighten up any spot with a splash of color and texture.

Some key points to consider if you're thinking about container gardens:

  • Choose the right container - Ceramic and terra cotta containers can crack if left our year round. Cheap plastics can fade, especially if in direct sunlight. Metal, fiberglass or high grade plastics are your best bet, although anything can be used as a planter. Old metal wheel barrows, barrels, or even an old boot can add interest. Whatever container you choose, be sure it has proper drainage.
  • Soil - Probably the most important ingredient for a successful container garden is good potting soil. Choose a mixture that provides good drainage and aeration.
  • Plant Compatibility - Be sure to select plants that are compatible in terms of light, water and growth. Don't mix shade plants with plants that need full sun. Consider where you'll be placing the container when choosing your plants.
  • Watering- Container gardens require more frequent watering than "in-ground" landscapes because the exposed sides of the containers result in more evaporation. Don't allow containers to dry completely or fine roots will die.
