Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

According to folklore, after hibernating for the winter, if it's sunny when the groundhog emerges on February 2nd he gets frightened by his shadow and goes back underground. This supposedly indicates that we're in for 6 more weeks of winter weather. But if he emerges and it's cloudy, he won't cast a shadow and spring will come early.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, PA, where the famous Punxsutawney Phil resides. The town celebrates the event with a festive atmosphere of music and food. While zoological data suggests that groundhogs have an average lifespan of 10 years in captivity, with a maximum lifespan of 14 years in captivity documented, Punxsutawney Phil fans and members of the "Inner Circle" say there is only one Phil and that he has made weather prognostications for over 123 years. They say that every summer Phil is given a sip of a mysterious Groundhog Elixir, which magically lengthens his life for 7 years.

But just how accurate is Phil? The National Climatic Data Center has reported the groundhogs overall prediction accuracy rate is around 39%. In spite of this, it's still fun to see what Phil predicts, but we hope you take it with a grain of salt. We recommend getting your weather forecast from someone using more proven scientific methods. As for the mysterious Groundhog Elixir, we'll let you form your own opinion on that.

This year that Phil did not see his shadow, which is suppose to mean an early spring.  We'll just have to wait and see if he's right this year.

Did you know....

In 1927 the Akehursts built a range of greenhouses on Joppa Road, operating under the name of Akehurst Brothers and almost exclusively produced cut roses and rose bushes?  The brothers won numerous awards for their cut roses, including one in 1951 for a bunch with 7-foot long stems!
