Greetings!
 | My kids helping out at the shelter during the blizzard. |
I ask those of you reading this message one question. "What (or who) inspires you?" This is usually a fairly easy question for people to answer. Some of the common sources of inspiration are friends and family, political or social leaders, movies, books and the list goes on and on. It is often easy for us to identify sources that inspire and excite people. But when we add two words, "to act," to the question above the answer is not as easy to find.
Alright, let's take another look at the updated question. "What (or who) inspires you to act?" These two little words really do dramatically change the question. As stated earlier, it is easy to be inspired. After watching a documentary, reading a book or seeing a compelling news story I have found myself inspired and saying "I am not going to do blah, blah anymore or I am going to volunteer at blah, blah." Then some time passes and I don't actually do any of the things I was inspired to do. I have a feeling I'm not the only one that has experienced this phenomenon. If you can relate, don't despair as there is hope for all of us. The good news is there are plenty of things that not only inspire me but that cause me to act. I can't tell you what things may inspire you to act; you have to find that out for yourself. I can, however, share with you just one of the many sources that inspire me to act.
One source of inspirational action for me is my children. I want to be a good example to them and teach them the importance of compassion for all living things. Over the years, they have helped foster kittens, guinea pigs and countless other animals in our home. They have cared for animals in the shelter. Now, as they are getting older I can see that the years of shelter training have given them a deep understanding of why we help animals. They continue to inspire me to act.
What is it that inspires you to act? I'd love to hear your answer. Here's my email address, cdicenso@parl.org. I hope you take me up on this and share with me your thoughts.

Happy Tails
cleo's happy tail!
Hi,
Particularly because the breed tends to get such a bad rap, I wanted to share with the story of Cleo, a pit bull that we adopted from PARL almost 3 years ago. Our other dog, Trolla (also adopted from PARL many years ago), was getting old and we wanted to get another dog while she was still with us -partly to lessen the blow of losing her, but also so that she could "teach" the new dog how to be as great as she was! We looked online at the dogs available for adoption at PARL, and Cleo's picture caught my attention. Then I read her profile: adopted and returned, TWICE. Yikes. Seemed like a huge red flag, so we kept looking...more
