"Yes, this is Horse Country and no, you cannot ride a horse here."  That's what I used to have to tell people that came into the First Peak Visitors Center.  One after another  families would wander in looking over the brochure rack for a local riding stable where they could take a guided trail ride. With all the horses we have here, for the non-horse-owning folks, it was a no go.  I did send people to the two stables at Lake Lure, but that was a hike and I'm sure some decided it was too much trouble.  But now, happily, that problem has been solved.  Bright's Creek Equestrian Center is now offering guided trail rides for the public.  Jerry Corn, Guide, and Samantha Choady, Equestrian Center Director, have some good quiet horses that will take you around through some of the prettiest country anywhere for an hour or two. The cost is reasonable.  For me, looking at the big picture, having the ability to offer contact with a horse for the uninitiated (or even experienced riders) was an ingredient that was missing for our Horse Country. Same with carriage rides - that contact, however brief, may be the only experience that some will ever have with a horse. While the summer is still in full swing and you've got guests looking to make the most of their visit to the foothills, give Bright's Creek a call and arrange a ride. It may be the beginning of something beautiful.

North Greenville University Launches Equestrian Programs

North Greenville University's Equestrian programs offered in the fall:
BS in Biology with Equestrian Track
BS in Biology with Pre-Vet Track

Program professor Thomas Allen explains, "There are two tracks [of the program]. One track is purely equestrian, and that is for the student who wants to know more about the horse: the physiology, the anatomy, nutrition, how to ride, and how to teach how to ride."

He continued, "The second track is a pre-professional track. That is for the student who wants to go to vet school, or wants to go to grad school and do research."

For more information about the program, call
