If you are a Polk County resident, you may be interested to know that tonight, June 23rd, there will be a public hearing on the new Economic Development policy for the county.  Of interest to the horse community is a provision to create an Equine Council, to "give the horse people a voice."   On the surface, this sounds like a great idea. But dig just below the surface and you will find problems. It should make all of us  very worried.  For starters, the horse community has a voice. A strong voice, usually unrestrained. We have many organizations that give us "voice" on all levels - competitions and riding interests, youth, horse welfare, land use, education and so on. Secondly,
nowhere does county government and the horse community intersect. We do not ride on county-owned land nor do we compete in county-owned facilities. I am not sure why the county feels they need an "advisory board" from the horse community. Maybe the arts community would welcome that opportunity. Or the retirement community or any number of groups that do need a voice. Our horse community is composed of private recreational/hobby interests and private entrepreneurial horse businesses. Lastly, they have said that they, the Commissioners, would appoint the members of the council just as is done with other advisory boards.  At that point, you have made it political and the horse community absolutely, positively does not need to be politicized.  The new plan is described as a "policy document."  Do we really want politicians deciding local equine policy? The public hearing is scheduled for  7 pm at the Womack Building, across from the courthouse, Columbus, NC.
The actual presentation of the policy by consultant Robert Williamson starts at 5 pm. A copy of the policy is available online at Polknc.org under Latest News banner.

Nicole Watts Seeks Sponsorship
Nicole Watts has set her sights on raising  $25,000 to spend 3 months this winter training in Orlando, Florida with Hilda Donahue. Hilda is one of the leading  trainers in the world, having competed successfully at Rolex, Burghley, The World Cup in France, Adelaide in Australia and was long-listed for the 2008 Olympics in Bei Jing. Nicole is seeking Hilda's guidance and expertise to campaign her stallions Half Acre's Zeus and Jack Frost in the discipline of Dressage, and her stallion Stone Toss in the sport of Eventing. The money she is requesting will go toward expenses for transport of the horses, daily training, and competition fees. Nicole would like to use this educational opportunity to better her business by earning show scores for these stallions to improve their marketability for breeding, and also to improve her skills as an instructor for the students that she teaches in North and South Carolina. Nicole thanks you for any help you can offer! Please visit http://www.gofundme.com/94g4jw to make a donation! She is also looking for business sponsors and will proudly display your company name on her stalls, trailer and attire. Please call 864-276-8536 with  questions.

"Moving to Summer Pastures"

Artist: Annette Randall

Annette Randall's love for horses and the West is apparent in her detailed and accurately rendered pencil drawings and oil paintings. Largely self-taught but always a student, Annette started drawing horses as a child, eventually developing a drawing technique all her own and later moving on to oils. She now works in both mediums.

Annette sketches and paints on location, supplementing with reference photos for studio work. This approach allows her to capture the freshness of the scene while saving accurate reference material for work in the studio.

Born and raised in Utah, but with ties to family in western Montana, Annette maintains friendships with ranchers in both areas who provide her with the resources and authenticity she needs to create accurate drawings and paintings.
