Some weeks the news I collect determines the commentary and this is one of those weeks. If you've never noticed, I especially like young riders - kids.
I believe a couple of things to be true - one being that you can't kill them (I've tried) and also that if we are going to have horses and a horse culture in the future we have to encourage kids while also saving the land so they will have a place to ride. So, I was delighted this week to be invited to speak at two Pony Club camps. At the River Valley Camp, a very serious 5 year-old Lillie, raised her hand, and in all manner of seriousness (with eyes like saucers) said to me, "your horse must listen to you but, (and she really stressed this) you must also listen to your horse." It was adorable. With camp being all about learning new skills as well as having fun, it wouldn't be a real summer with your pony without a swim in the pond. The campers and their ponies/horses had a
wonderful time cooling off bareback. Ahh, to be a kid. Two days later, another camp was winding down with thirty exhausted but happy kids. They had the good fortune of spending some instruction time with the talented Ann Haller. Turn the page, and another young rider, Liza Goodlett, turned in a fine
performance at the TRHC show last weekend and was rewarded with some accolades (and corrections, of course) from the Master, George Morris. Fortunately, being a kid, you just say thank you and savor the scrapbook moment for years to come. If it had been me (we're now entering fantasy fiction), knowing who George Morris is and all the myth and legend that surrounds him, I would have either fainted or maybe worse, wet my pants.

Liza Goodlett Meets GM
Horse Country native Betty Reynolds Oare, Liza Goodlet and the Master himself
Liza Goodlett is 17 years old and a rising Senior at Spartanburg High School. She serves as the junior board member of Blue Ridge Hunter Jumper Association and trains with Holli Adams at Still Creek Farm. Her horse is Testarosa (Frisco), an 18 hh Oldenburg.
If Liza lives a long happy productive life, most likely one of the hightlights she will reflect on is the rainy June weekend in 2013 when she got to show what's she's made of with George Morris judging. Hopefully, she will smile to herself at the weekend's results when she and her horse won the 15-17 Equitation over fences and on the flat; won the ASPCA McClay; won the Washington Jumper Phase; was 5th in the Washington Hunter Phase, was 3rd in the USEF Pessoa Medal, won the EJ Haun Equitation and to top it all off, she won the Betty Oare overall highpoint Junior Equitation Trophy.

Another View on GM's Visit
Editor's Note: Sammi Messamer was one of the young jump crew working the George Morris clinic last weekend. Here she shares her experience.
"I was privileged to be one of four Greenville Foothills Pony Clubbers selected to be jump crew for George Morris. This was an expensive clinic and I probably wouldn't have been able to go otherwise. We spent two ten hour days on our feet running to quickly put up jumps or do whatever was asked of us. We were expected to read his mind a bit!
I really appreciated seeing a different style of teaching. It also made me appreciate how great my trainer is when I hear her say a lot of the same things George Morris does. The work was hard but the rewards were great. I got to listen up close to everything he said to these talented riders. Overall it was a great experience and I am really happy to have been able to do this."

SC's Dogwood Stables Takes Home the Prize at the Belmont On Saturday, Cot Campbell's Palace Malice sped ahead and took the win at the Triple Crown's hardest race. Cot is a legendary South Carolina horseman, owner of Dogwood Stables in Aiken. Palace, as he is called around the barn, is the son of super-horse Curlin.
Supposedly, Hall of Fame jockeys Gary Stevens on Oxbow and Mike Smith on Palace Malice were nose and nose as their horses hit the middle of the final turn. As reported in every media version, Gary Stevens, aboard Preakness winner Oxbow, was going to relinquish the lead to the hard-charging Palace Malice. He glanced over to his right and looked at good friend Mike Smith and told him: "You go on with him big boy, you're moving better than me." South Carolina has long had a great thoroughbred training in Camden, Aiken, Elloree and Kingstree, among others. In Landrum for many years Tony Wallace (Fairview Farms) trained winners for some of racing's most prominent families. Congratulations to Cot Campbell and the Dogwood team. Photo Credit: NYTimes |
