It's interesting to see what gets readers' attention. Writing an opening blurb every week, I never know what's going to hit a nerve, spark an outrage, garner a tear or invoke a smile. Or, to be honest....a yawn.
However, I do know this--the story of Sgt. Reckless, the Korean War hero who was bought off the racetrack for $250 and put into service on the front lines, has generated more discussion, more forwards and more repeated interest than almost any other TWITHC topic. Almost a week doesn't go by that someone doesn't send me an email asking if I've heard this story.
Now, with volunteer-generated funding, Washington state wildlife sculptor Jocelyn Russell is working on a life-size bronze sculpture of Sgt. Reckless. It will be dedicated at the Marine headquarters in Quantico, Virgina in July
26, 2013.  I'm happy to see this horse honored because she represents all the war time horses that have served us faithfully.  Fortunately,  she came through harrowing battles in one piece and lived out a long happy retirement at Camp Pendleton--one of the lucky ones.

War Hero Sgt. Reckless to be honored with memorial
Contacted this weekend, Jocelyn Russell is hard at work getting Sgt. Reckless ready to go.  Comments Russell, " I am in a headlong marathon to get Reckless finished and crated by Wednesday night. This is the last photo of her assembled in clay, Valentines Day. I have since taken her apart and lowered her body to finish the tack/ammo without standing on a ladder.  Not quite as 'aesthetic'. This also allows me to finish many details on the face, legs, hooves and tail from all angles."

REPLACING LEG STRAPS

When the old ones wear out, attach new  leg straps to the blanket.  If the leg straps
are snap on, you can just snap the new straps on to the D rings. If the leg straps have to be sewn on, you can sew them to the blanket yourself, use a blanket adhesive or you can take the blanket to  EquiDress & have the straps professionally attached.
