KIDS Amazon John's Anteater
DIG INTO READING
Children learned about animals that burrow underground, went spelunking, dug for Egyptian treasure, & made dinosaur eggs.

Right, Zack Olin wrangles an anteater with Amazon John in New Palestine. Due to limited capacity, we moved it outdoors.

What did you like best about the summer reading club?

"The little incentives were great for the kids. They loved getting a new book and little toys. I especially loved the coupons for free food from area businesses."

"I should not forget to mention the kindness on the part of all the staff of the library. Your desire to answer so willingly all of my kids requests to find books helps their love of reading flourish."

Kevin Gregory's Weather Camp

"The children's events are great! I remember thinking 'They've done it again!' at the very nice carnival. I could go on and on about how nice the children's programs at the library are and how much my son has enjoyed them through the years."

TEENS
BENEATH THE SURFACE
Teens made candy sushi, fixed no-bake pizza, transformed old CDs into art, brawled over big screens, and got locked in for a night of Hunger Games.

At both library locations, 67 teens volunteered 223 hours reading to 74 children (ages 2-9) over the summer. The project for helping kids maintain their reading levels was made possible by a "Youth as Resources Grant" from United Way of Central Indiana.

Teens Read Session

Aubrey Cole and Charli Colclazier shared a book during a "Teens Read the Way" session.

What teens say:

"I was a reader for Teens Read the Way, and I thought it was awesome!"

"The reading club is fantastic as it pushes teens to read and to expand their knowledge. All while on summer break!"

"I liked that you could log your books online."

ADULTS Richard Dole, Red Hot
OWN THE NIGHT
Adults were treated to Minnetrista Theater, a garden cooking class, stories about growing up in Nazi Germany, and dancers who brought Degas' paintings to life.

Richard Dole of the Red Hots played funky, swampy New Orleans jazz in front of a textile mural, by Marilyn Price, that depicts noteworthy Hancock County landmarks. The tapestry was donated to the library by retired bank executive Judy Brown this summer. It was commissioned by the Greenfield Banking Co. in 1985, in collaboration with Greenfield Revitalization, Inc.

Thanks for telling us!

"I like the ease of being able to register online and log my books weekly into the computer. I am unable to drive and look forward to doing the reading program every summer for chances to win nice prizes."

"It would be very awesome to win an iPod Mini. I read a lot anyway, but writing it down makes you realize how much you really do read."

"It is fun to see if I can hit that goal of 5 books, and I can see how counting books I read to my child will encourage me to read more books with them as they get older."

"My husband and I were in the summer reading club and felt that it made us read more due to a competition between the two of us. Our family had a GREAT experience with the club and the Hancock County Library as a whole."
