Mum's the Word - Local Gifts for Your Mommy, Dearest

Mama Dukes has nurtured your body and soul; chocolates won't suffice. And because we've all learned our lesson with the vacuum, the pots & pans and that time we totally thought she'd appreciate the leaf blower. Let's face it we can all use a little Mother's Day gift giving inspiration when its time to buy for the person who's always been there for you. Whether you're buying for your mom, grandmother, wife or aunt who holds that special place in your life we've got you covered.

She's All That: Mom's known for her multiple personalities. Asheville, NC clay sculptor, Karyn Gould is always doing very interesting work in polymer clay and glass. She has created some colorful glass ornaments that are embellished with polymer clay 'mountain landscapes' along with recycled glass bottles that she has turned into beautiful hanging outdoor lanterns with polymer clay 'nature' designs. Website.

She's Fiery: Terri Sigler, a fine arts glassblower, lives in Asheville, NC. The foundation of her art follows a long history  of form as the wellspring to grace. Terri spent three years building her own glassblowing equipment and studio adjacent to her home in North Asheville. She has studied Venetian and Scandinavian-style glass at the Corning Museum of Glass and Haystack School of Crafts. Her recent work focuses on Venetian-style cane and murrine vessels. Website.

She's a Natural: In a world that can be filled with chaos and routine, the Honeysuckle Tea House is Mom's tranquil escape. Welcome home Mother! Located in the pastoral Chapel Hill countryside, 15 minutes from downtown and tucked away on a country road, Honeysuckle is the unique destination mom has been waiting for.

The tea house itself, is an open air structure, built with repurposed materials and timber framing, and vaulted on four shipping containers. Surrounded by 72 raised cedar herb-beds, a greenhouse, a flower & herb labrynth, and a 6 acre elderberry, heritage grain, hop,and Camellia Sinensis farm. Honeysuckle is quickly establishing itself as a seat for healing, with its plant based remedies.

Akin to the apothecaries of old, Honeysuckle Tea House, connects its customers with the power and beauty of the plants and flowers naturally occurring in surrounding environments. Most every ingredient under their label, has been grown, processed and packaged on site. While they are gentle in process, firm in commitment to growing, crafting and designing small-batch products at the highest level of quality.

Besides selling seasonal apothecary items, 'Garden to Glass' artisanal beverages and health conscious bites, Honeysuckle also offers WIFI, live music, a myriad of educational workshops, weekly garden tours, and a playground for the kids.

Take Mom to Honeysuckle for a relaxing day. Or shop online. Click here.

Dog Day Afternoon - Off-Leash Dog Park Opens at North Hills

Watch Dogs - Who let the dogs out!!! No worries, it's ok. On Wednesday, May 4 you and your pets are invited to the grand opening of the 9,500 square foot dog park in the Park District of North Hills. The grand opening spans from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the ribbon cutting at 5. There will be free pet gifts from The Dartmouth North Hills Apartments, doggie treats from Woof Gang Bakery, and smoothies from b.good. This a great new amenity which will enhance recreation and socializing. Of course, make sure you watch your dogs more than your smart phone to keep them from getting too up front and personal.

Doo-Ty Calls - Tips for Proper Etiquette in Dog Parks:  Besides the obvious (doo-ty calls), here are tips to make your trip to the dog park more enjoyable for you and your loved ones.

Control your dog & Not others: Your dog should know and respect the basic commands (come, sit and stay). Also, avoid correcting the behaviors of other people's dogs without receiving permission first -- or the scrap might end up being between owners!

Don't bring their favorite toy: By all means bring a plaything, but leave your pet's absolute favorite toy at home because chances are good that it won't make it out of the park unscathed.

Don't bring dogs in heat: The mere presence of a hot-to-trot female can send normally well-behaved males into a frenzy.

Don't bring aggressive or fearful dogs to the park to socialize them: Work out the socializing with the dog trainer before subjecting them to close encounters of the doggy kind.

Be watchful with small children: They run and yell, and dogs will instinctively chase them because that's what dogs do.

Don't embarrass your dog with cutesy dog apparel:  Save them from bullying!

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
