A Force Awakening - First Night Raleigh 2016

There's a force awakening in Raleigh this Thursday, December 31st. It's a First Night sequel... the best on this side of our galaxy. Starring fast lights, great action sequences, characters, special effects, music and emotional drama... the countdown is on! No one wants to miss the famous acorn drop and fireworks at midnight while "Celebrating North Carolina Firsts" but there's plenty of other fun along the way.

This year's fun includes the Children's Celebration and Early Countdown at 7pm. Not to mention, lots of activities including  thriller rides, games, performances by See Gulls, T0W3RS, Jonathan Byrd, John Dee Holeman, NC Opera Singers, and more. The night caps off with a performance by Scythian.

A New App to Guide You - May the force be with you as you download the First Night Raleigh
Scythian
2016 app and plan your New Year's Eve celebration. This app is available for iPhone and Android devices and features planning tools, interactive maps, artists and activity info. The mobile app will provide a complete list of all performances and activities happening during First Night Raleigh 2016. With an interactive map that will show where events are and easiest routes for access click here.

Countdown to Midnight (and 7pm) - The Raleigh acorn, (designed by David Benson) has become synonymous with First Night Raleigh, the festival is much more than the countdown to midnight. Your admission pass grants you access to every performance and every venue throughout the day. That's nearly 100 performances in over three dozen locations across downtown Raleigh. What a bargain for just $10!

Make a Global New Year's Resolution -  From 5 to 11pm on Fayetteville Street (100 Block), share an idea for what you can do to make the world a better place in the coming year. This globe was created by artist, Heath Satow. Festival goers are invited to write and tie on this artistic globe a thought for what they can do in the coming year to make this world a better place.

Fantastical First Night Ferris Wheel - From 2 to 11pm (ongoing) on Fayetteville Street at Hargett Street, you can take a ride and reach 90 feet in the air atop a gondola-style Ferris wheel. Watch the magic happen and reach for the stars.

Andy Griffith Movie Marathon - Come to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and celebrate two of NC native's famous movies! 'No Time for Sergeants' from 5:30 to 7:30pm, starring Andy Griffith. (Will Stockdale is a country bumpkin drafted into the Air Force and too dumb to realize he's driving everyone around him crazy.) An Ira Levin classic from 1955.
'A Face in the Crowd' from 8pm to 10pm. Elia Kazan's 1957 acclaimed searing classic starring Andy Griffith as Lonesome Rhodes. This classic film offers a different view of the scope of Andy's range and talent.
Both movies are being played at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences - Auditorium.

Animals of the Hour - When visiting the NC Museum of Natural Sciences you'll want to go to the third floor for the Windows on the World exhibit. Get up close and personal with some of North Carolina's resident creatures. Exhibit times are 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00pm. See who's the Animal of the Hour.

Art Putt - Enjoy the game of miniature golf and the nine holes created by local artists at the same time from 2pm until 9pm at Market Hall in City Market. Play your way through salamanders, Krispy Kreme, pirates, and more! Featured Artists are Sandra Davidson, Anita Funston, Cameron Laws, Chelsea Jester, Kerri Eckes, Frederico Planchon, Dare Coulter, Leigh Hawkins, and Nico Amortegui.

The Sizzler - New to First Night and an update of the classical Scrambler ride, this is one of the first rides at the NC State Fair! This ride is thrills and fun for all ages! So hop on and take a spin! And while you're there, look for us, The Beltline Buzz; we're the media sponsor of The Sizzler!

Rides opens at 2pm and end at 11pm on Fayetteville Street at Martin Street.

Gold Leaf Sleigh Rides - Catch a ride on John Wesley Smith's horse-drawn sleigh as it makes a loop around the historic North Carolina State Capitol. Don't miss this annual First Night Raleigh favorite! A First Night button is required to ride. Begins at 8pm until 11pm at the State Capital Grounds at Morgan Street.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
