Sweet Release - Lavender Fields Forever

Everyone likes a little nose candy. But have you thought of going right to the source here in Chatham County? You no longer have to get your "lavender fix" from the south of France. We've got you covered!

Mezza Luna Lavender Farm is a family owned farm run by Lourdes Santos, her husband and three children. The fields are opened to the public from May 29th till June 14th from 9:00am till 6:00pm. You're invited to bring a picnic, make it a family outing, take pictures, harvest some lavender, buy lavender items, enjoy activities for your kids; such as face painting, crafts, cornhole, baseball and more.

Santos sells Lavender ice cream, made locally by Fresh Local Ice Cream of Raleigh (see article below about Fresh Local Ice Cream). Lavender soaps in several fragrances and sizes are sold was well as other homemade goods. If you'd like to pre-order soaps, please email your interest so they have an idea of how many to make. It takes four weeks to cure and supplies could run low. The beautiful and wonderful fragrant soaps and sachets make great gifts for all occasions.

Mezza Luna Lavender Farm has about 1,500 lavender plants of about a dozen different varieties. Some are deep purple, others are less striking, but more fragrant. Santos can tell you all about the different varieties, pointing out which ones are best for cooking and which ones are best for oils and fragrances.

She also can tell you that she can't make lavender bloom on "her" schedule. She has to adhere to Mother Nature. So some plants are ready for picking now and others will be ready over the next two weeks. But she's happy to open up her small farm to the public. She envisions families spending a casual few hours here with picnics, lavender picking and activities for kids.

Visit this family farm to see the various types of lavender. Learn about lavender, pick your own, and hear about its decorative and healthy uses from the owner and grower, Lourdes Santos, in scenic Chatham County.

Cooking with Lavender - Lavender is best known for its fragrant, delicate Provencal appearance in soaps, sachets, essential oil and other body care products. At least in the US, using culinary lavender to enhance a recipe with a Mediterranean sway is a road less traveled. Lavender use has broadened over the past years with recipes showcasing the aromatic herb in everything from desserts to cocktails with savory dishes in between. It's time for you to keep culinary lavender in your spice pantry and enjoy incorporating it in everything from salads to a simple favorite Roasted Lavender Potatoes dish that we bet will become a hit in your home.

When cooking with lavender it is key to ensure using culinary/edible lavender and not lavender prepared for things like potpourri. (Be sure to ask Lourdes at Mezza Luna which lavender is best used for cooking.) With a small amount added to many recipes, a ho-hum dish can be elevated to having international flair!

Being particularly compatible with the flavors of honey and lemon, lavender is a perfect summertime herb to brighten seasonal foods. Some of our favorite recipes will whet your appetite to try some lavender in your own kitchen this summer. These recipes are made with simple, whole ingredients, bursting with flavor to perk up grilling, salads, dessert, libations and more. Naturally gluten-free too! Enjoy these recipes!

Lavender Mojito - Made by Sondra Bernstein at the Girl & the Fig in Sonoma, CA. Here's her recipe.

Pink Lemonade Lavender Thyme Sorbet - This sorbet is cooling, thirst-quenching and packed with sophisticated flavors of thyme and lavender to compliment the Pink Lemonade. Recipe.

Lavender Roasted Potatoes - There is nothing better than a crispy-on-the-outside-soft-on- the-inside roasted potato.  And the addition of the lavender makes it a whole different and soul-satisfying dish. Here's Toni Dash's recipe from Boulder, CO.

Honey Lavender Ice Cream - In the movie "It's Complicated" there's a scene when Adam was having dinner with Jane, he leaves, and Jake came in and ate the left over Croque-Monsieur and honey lavender ice cream. Yes, that ice cream, you can now make. Here's the recipe!

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
