Destination Infatuation -  Southern Smoke BBQ in Garland, NC

Some may call it infatuation, but we call it counting our blessings! We took a road trip to experience what all the rage is about and returned with tales of having the best BBQ and fresh southern sides cooked by Matthew Register, owner of Southern Smoke BBQ and South  Catering from Garland, NC. This rage isn't going away... so grab a friend and head east!

Matthew's labor of love in creating new and innovative side dishes compliments his popular chopped oak-wood smoked BBQ, baby-back-ribs rubbed with his house rub, slow smoked, and finished with Sweet Grace sauce, and beef brisket, sliced and burnt ends...all cooked to perfection. A few sides you'll want to try are; Mac and Cheese (always on the menu), Southern Succotash, Sweet Potato Pork Belly Hash, Pickled Cucumber & Tomato Salad with feta cheese & balsamic, Squash Marmalade, and Pickled Watermelon Rinds. You'll need to follow Southern Smoke BBQ on Facebook to keep up with the flavorful sides and main dishes being offered each week; because the menus change daily.

There's something to be said for taking stock of the people in North Carolina that love what they do and love where they do it more than anything. Matthew Register's passion for cooking, dedication in supporting local farmers and creating new, unconventional recipes as sides for his traditional BBQ are just a few good reasons why folks head to Garland, NC for lunch every Thursday and Friday from 11:30am till 1:30pm (or when the food runs out).

Garland, population... 340, an agricultural promise land. And Southern Smoke BBQ is its main
Sweet Potato Pork Belly Hash
attraction! Cooking 24 racks of ribs on any given Thursday or Friday and selling out by 12:15 is a force to be reckoned with. The trend to follow great chefs around the state have become more prevalent. So driving for an hour and 10 minutes for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays to enjoy what's on Southern Smoke BBQ's "menu for the day" is no exception.

Register appreciates the creative opportunity that comes with using seasonal ingredients, and he enjoys pushing the envelope with new recipes he'll offer for his Catering business, called South Catering as well as his outdoor seating restaurant, Southern Smoke BBQ. He's an avid reader of cookbooks; all kinds...current and from years gone by. They inspire him to continue trying new dishes and creating new and sometimes old-fashioned ways of preparing fresh dishes.

South Catering - From corporate dinners, backyard parties, wedding receptions and much more, South Catering will handle your event so that you can enjoy it as much as your guests.

Menus are created uniquely for you. They will build it around your occasion or your theme and your budget. Presentation is just as important to South Catering as is using fresh local ingredients. Click Here for some sample menus, but keep in mind they will create anything you'd like. Matthew and his wife Jessica have a strong team that caters events for large gatherings to small intimate dinner parties. Call and inquire about catering your next event.

Sweet Grace & Two Brothers Sauces - In 2010 Matthew began smoking pork (and practically anything else he could get his hands on) the old-fashioned way, slow and low over oak wood. He then began experimenting with sauces and created Sweet Grace, named after their daughter and Two Brothers, named after their sons. These were the beginnings of Southern Smoke BBQ. Sauces are also available at the restaurant or can be found at Southern Season in Chapel Hill and Heritage Market in Wake Forest. Click Here for other retail stores.

It is time to make a pilgrimage to Garland, NC and taste southern cooking at its best!

Locally Grown - House of Swank Clothing Company's NC-Themed Apparel

Raddest NC Shirts & Swag: According to founder John Pugh (aka Johnny Swank),"The mission of the House of Swank Clothing Company is to produce the raddest NC-themed shirts and swag on the planet, period".  So when the Charlotte Observer called Raleigh "boring" in a recent opinion article, House of Swank hit back with its "Keep Raleigh Boring" T-Shirt.  As you will see, promoting NC and local pride is good business.

Absolute Southern: The House of Swank Clothing Company is based in Raleigh and all products are printed or made downtown. Their mobile store has been a regular feature at local festivals and music events and now they have launched a permanent shop at 315 South Bloodworth Street (open Tuesday - Friday from 2-5 pm and for certain special events, sales and exchange dates). That said, the best way to sample their goods is to go straight to their online catalog.

Tank Tops (but no Beer Bellies): House of Swank T-Shirts are marketed to both men and women in four main categories (Absolute Southern, Food & Beverage, Represent Your City, and State Pride & School Colors).  Women can order Tank Tops (sorry  guys ... no Italian T's) and there is also a good selection of infant ware, koozies, hats, hoodies, and buttons. From "Collards" to "BBQ" to Moonshine", the House of Swank has more NC coverage than Kudzu and they make great souvenirs for your out-of-town guests.  Check them out and Tell Your Mama - Free Shipping Every Day!

The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
