Baguettes, Brioche, and Breads...Oh My! - Night Kitchen Bakehouse & Cafe

Sure, we were all devastated and sad when Magnolia Grill closed. But as the saying goes, when a door closes, a window opens. And that's exactly what happened!

Night Kitchen Bakehouse & Cafe opened the end of 2014 in downtown Raleigh's Seaboard Station by owner, Helen Pfann, former pastry chef from Magnolia Grill. After 10 years spent in the baking business, Helen Pfann finally has a bakery of her own. Serving artisan breads, pastries, sandwiches and salads. Pfann will primarily make her baked goods in what she terms the "European tradition," except for one item on the menu; cheesecake. She loves cheesecake and has got to have it!

Pfann got her start in baking right after college. She'd attended an arts school, but wound up working part-time in a Boston bakery to make ends meet. She was drawn to the craft and loved working with her hands and baking allowed her to do that. She worked for artisan bakers, learning the skills of the trade, before moving to Raleigh in 2008. Perhaps you tasted her goods when she made pastries for the renowned Magnolia Grill in Durham. The restaurant closed in 2012.

Pfann says that she fell in love with Raleigh as soon as she moved here and that she never considered opening her business anywhere else. She says she's excited to be a part of a business community undergoing so much growth.

Thank goodness for us, she chose to launch her bakery in Raleigh! Night Kitchen brings European baking tradition to Seaboard Station with hearth-baked loaves and classic pastries for any occasion. They prepare all breads, pastries and savory foods in house using honest ingredients. Night Kitchen also brews fair-trade organic coffee and espresso from Equal Exchange Coffee Co-op and features a selection of fine teas from Tin Roof Teas in Cameron Village.

The shop offers an assortment of house-baked breads including; olive bread, nine-grain, rustic sourdough, walnut levain and brioche and savory pastries including; bread pudding, Gruyere-stuffed croissants, quiche-by-the-slice and cheddar-herb scone.

Follow the bakery on Facebook to see the daily treat options. And enjoy, the baguettes, brioche, and breads. Oh my!

Reaching Across the Aisle & Pond - Destination Weddings

There are two kinds of brides-to-be in this world: those who have been planning their weddings ever since they could say "silk taffeta" and those who expect things to fall into place with as little planning as possible. Regardless of what type you are, you may want to consider these two destinations across the pond for unique venues or romantic honeymoon.

Yes, we know, sometimes this job has its perks. Traveling overseas to bring you this story is one of them. Whether you make a reservation or not, you'll surely find inspiration while planning your wedding.

If you like to fashion your lives after the characters on Downton Abbey (minus getting jilted at the altar, going to war, death during childbirth, and the weird Mr. Pamuk and Mr Green scenarios), then you should consider having your wedding at Highclere Castle. (Where Downton Abbey was filmed and home of Lord and Lady Carnaravon).

Entering the park gates and driving through spectacular landscaped rolling hills to arrive in front of this romantic, Victorian Castle, is impressive enough. But once inside you may never want to leave.

Highclere offers elegant reception rooms from the saloon, with stunning high vaulted ceilings where the wedding ceremony can take place, to the sumptuous drawing room and smoking room for receptions or drinks and canaps. If the weather permits, the Castle lawns provide a beautiful setting to use and enjoy. And catering is provided by its own in-house team of fine chefs.

Highclere is set in 1,000 acres of parkland and in the heart of the countryside located, within easy reach of London, as well as being 50 minutes from Heathrow Airport.

Private guided tours of the Castle and grounds can be arranged to enhance your day as well as a guided tour of the Egyptian Antiquities Exhibition in the Castle cellars.

A forever memorable time had by all! Website.

The Vow Factor - Cliveden House is a privately owned 5 Red Star award-winning hotel and spa set amongst 376 acres of National Trust parklands and overlooks the River Thames in the heart of the Berkshire countryside and only 1 hour away from Highclere Castle.

The original house was built in 1666 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Queen Victoria, a frequent guest was not amused when the house was bought by William Waldorf Astor, America's richest citizen. When in 1906 he gave it to his son and daughter-in-law Nancy Astor, Cliveden became the hub of a hectic social whirl, where notable guests included everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and President Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw.

Cliveden is the ultimate venue for an enchanting wedding with its fairy tale architecture, lavish interiors and breathtaking grounds. Attention to detail is paramount with a wedding adviser to guide you though every last detail to ensure your wedding to be perfect.

Honeymoon Destination - Cliveden House & Spa could also be a perfect honeymoon. You're guaranteed to stay in a beautiful room filled with exquisite furnishings and priceless antiques. Each room is named after a prominent guest or figure from Cliveden's past, and furnished accordingly...from Churchill to Chaplin, Astor to Orkney and Sutherland to the Prince of Wales, each room provides a truly unique experience. Website

Let your location do the work for you - With unique venues dictating the style, and you'll have to do very little else to set the mood. Don't be afraid to put your budget toward a special destination. Destination weddings are surprisingly not as expensive as one thinks and a lot less stressful.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
