The Game of Hearts - Shoot for the Moon this Valentine's

How do you really feel about Valentine's Day? It's the best. On second thought, it sucks. No, it's the greatest day ever. Actually, we wanna sleep through it. Is it just us, or does everyone have a love/hate relationship with February 14?

To find out, we hit the streets and surfed the web asking what to do on the big V-Day and in the process captured advice for long-lasting love, people who'd rather have dogs than boyfriends, and even semi-awkward marriage proposals.

Romantic Restaurants - While Raleigh isn't what comes to mind when imagining some of the world's most romantic cities, it still has an over-abundance of incredibly romantic restaurants, perfect for Valentine's Day.

Second Empire Restaurant & Tavern - This historic Victorian home-turned-four-diamond-award-winning-restaurant is everything Raleigh residents love about their idyllic town: a mix of gorgeous, Southern timelessness with modern and timely updates. The original building has been kept almost full intact, with a working fireplace in the dining room. The renowned wine list will make for a truly memorable experience.

Bloomsbury Bistro is located at Five Points, serving nationally renowned cuisine but never sacrificing its comfortable neighborhood setting. The seasonal menu changes every six months, reflecting a true engagement with North Carolina's food culture. Bloomsbury explores the boundaries and traditions of French cooking, and infuses every dish with more than just fresh ingredients, but ethnic and unique flavors that push the expectations of classic French cuisine. The restaurant has private dining rooms available that are ideal for a romantic dinner for two. A special Valentine's Day love menu has been created as well.

Herons, located inside of the Umstead Hotel in Cary, is an elegant and gorgeous extension of everything that the hotel and spa stands for. The 98-seat dining room features an open kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows with view of the hotel's terrace, lawn and lake. Outdoor dining is closed during the winter, but reopens for the other three seasons in the year. Herons is more than just a favorite for those looking for a romantic night out: the restaurant has been recognized by national media, including Food & Wine, Cond Nast, Southern Living and more.

Rey's Restaurant takes its cues from all of the usual fine-dining requirements, but also adds a  unique touch of French Quarter taste and ingredients. The upscale restaurant's priority is ambiance above all else, with low lighting and quality furniture that ensures patrons are immediately immersed in a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The unique menu manages to blend the Cajun cuisine of New Orleans's with ingredients fit for a special occasion. Rey's keeps the romance both within and outside of the kitchen.

Sweet Elegance - So many old recipes are making a come-back and we believe Cherries Jubilee should be one to kick off Valentine's Day. Cherries Jubilee was invented in 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Larousse Gastronomique has a splendid interpretation of the original recipe. Recipe.

Say It with a Card - You know, sometimes it's just hard to express how you feel about someone especially if you're part of the millennial generation. (According to the New York Times) Traditional courtship rules are no longer. Millennials are more fond of speed dating, or their own form of it, comprising efficient meet-ups at bars and coffee shops, than expensive dinner dates. They might want to get married, someday, maybe? They're notoriously phone-skittish, preferring instead to text, or use one of a myriad dating apps available (mostly) for free. And all of this is making their love lives really confusing.
Its pretty hard out there for their modern relationship. Here are some Valentine's Day cards that totally get it:

Sweetheart Chocolate Martini - Candy conversation hearts are the quintessential Valentine's Day treat! Place one cute-as-can-be candy on the rim of this ultra-rich chocolate drink and serve to your sweetie. Create an elegant drink by dipping martini glasses in chocolate-flavored hard-shell-style ice cream coating. Recipe

Sensational Valentine Cupcakes - Treat your sweetie to a Valentine's Day cupcake that shows your love from the first bite. You'll fall in love with the easy decorating techniques and sweet flavors used to create these delicious gems perfect for Valentine's
Day. Click on photo descriptions for recipe links.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
