b.good for Goodness' Sake! - In North Hills

Have you been good this year? It's not too late, you know....

While doing your last minute holiday shopping, stop by b.good. That's right... it's easy to b.good! b.good's a new restaurant in North Hills serving lunch and dinner that's not just good, but also good for you. At b.good real food, fast, means food made by people, not factories.

The restaurant and its concept was started by two best friends who grew up eating in their uncle's kitchen. Anthony's Uncle Faris served the best homemade food. Fifteen years later, they started a business together around a simple idea; make fast-food "real" by making it the way it should be... by people not factories.

Anthony and Jon loved fast-food but hated how it made them feel. So they created a place where one can feel good about burgers and fries. Uncle Faris would always leave them with pieces of advice like..."take it easy", "live life", and most of all "be good".

So there you have it...their mission was to make fast-food "real" by making it the way it should be... by people, and with products locally-raised, house-ground burgers, hand-cut fries & sweet potato fries, all-natural shakes, and fresh salads.

Beyond serving real food, fast, the decade-old brand is also committed to making a positive difference in the local community. To make that pledge as real as its natural beef burgers, fresh salads, seasonal veggie bowls and handmade fresh fruit smoothies, b.good will actively support Activate Good, a nonprofit connecting citizens to volunteer needs with charitable causes around the Triangle.

Go on now... b.good and Merry Christmas!

To Bee or Not to Bee

Best Yam Vodka on Earth - Covington

After each sweet potato harvest, there are piles of tasty but misshapen tubers that never make it to market. Several years ago, farmers Jimmy Burch and Bobby Ham hatched a plan to save those ugly ducklings, at least in the Tarheel State. They decided to try their hand at creating a great vodka made from the fruits of their own labor - so to speak. As it turns out, sweet potatoes (ipomoea batatas) make an excellent vodka - and why not - folks have been making potato vodka for the past 300 years!

If vodka could be made from regular old white potatoes, they reasoned, why not sweet potatoes? To their delight, the resulting spirit retained the distinct taste and from-the-earth purity of its origins. "People will tell you that vodka has no flavor," says head distiller Paul Gussenhofen."Anybody who knows liquor knows that's a myth." Amid the alcoholic vapors that rise off a glass of Covington is a caramel aroma that offsets the bite of the 80-proof vodka. This might be the best use of sweet potatoes since your grandmother's marshmallow-topped casserole.

Covington gourmet vodka is handmade locally from seedling to bottling. It's expertly crafted in small batches using a combination of traditional and modern distilling practices. The unhurried approach and varietal selection of locally grown Covington sweet potatoes costs them a little more, however, it does create truly outstanding vodka.

Remarkably smooth and rich with subtle creamy undertones - with not even the slightest hint of heat on the long and level finish. This degree of artisanal quality is a rare find and it is certainly never found in ordinary mass-produced vodka at any price.

We owe this good fortune to the miracles of mother nature and to the small family farmers who plow the fertile soils of North Carolina - home to the world's best sweet potatoes and this exceptional vodka. Yam good vodka! Cheers!

COVINGTONā„¢ GOURMET VODKA is available at all NC ABC retail stores. Please ask for it by name and at the bars and restaurants.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
