The Latest Buzz On ... Fashion, Food & Fun
The Imagine Nation for Your Kids This Christmas
Once upon a time, back when "text" was still a noun, and not every toy had batteries, there were toys that set out to become the best Christmas present under the tree and that every child in the US dreamed of getting. Those toys yearning to be in every little pair of hands wasn't a marketing opportunity, but a chance to positively affect the future remembering that the most powerful thing any of us played with in this life was our imagination. Few things define our childhood memories like the toys we grow up playing with. We all had our favorite toy that we just couldn't be without, whether it was our beloved stuffed animal that was needed to fall asleep, or the Etch-A-Sketch that made long, cross-country family road trips bearable. Many of these toys are still as wildly popular as they were decades back, such as Steiff, Madame Alexander and Tonka. So you ask where do you find such toys? And NO they won't be in those big box stores!
NOFO in Five Points, Raleigh has been stocking the their shelves with the plush adorable's and quality toys that last for generations. You may be surprised to learn that they regularly stock Madame Alexander dolls, Steiff Animals, Moulin Roty, Vilac, Hape, Maileg, Schylling, Tonka, Eeboo, Jellycat, Manhatton Toy and more. In fact they are the only story in Raleigh that carries many of these lines. Since 1880, Steiff has been making plush toys and collectibles that set the world standard for quality. Made from only the finest materials, each Steiff animal is meticulously hand-sewn and hand-finished by talented artisans in Giengen, Germany. The company is perhaps best-known for its bears -- Steiff invented the Teddy bear in 1902. Since the firm was founded by Margarete Steiff in 1880, more than 16,000 different designs for animals have been created. Vilac has been manufacturing high-quality traditional wooden toys for 100 years. To make Vilac toys, the wood is turned, smoothed, sanded and lacquered by the skilled craftsmen at Moirans-en-montagne, France. This process makes for a truly beautiful finish. Every item in their broad range of toys, including the Vilac car, demonstrates the company's dedication to the poetry of wood as an organic and durable material; perfect for child's play. Beatrice Alexander was the quintessential American female entrepreneur. She founded the Madame Alexander Doll Company in New York City around her kitchen table in 1923. Her core belief then and for them still today is that dolls should be used to engage a child's imagination. "Love is in the details." The Madame Alexander Doll Co. upholds the high standards of impeccable quality, ensuring that all dolls manufactured under their care will receive hands-on attention and meticulous scrutiny every step of the way. Moulin Roty has been producing iconic French toys for over 40 years now and they continue to go from strength to strength in terms of popularity, quality and imagination. Although vintage and delicate in style each toy is highly crafted and produced to a high specification to withstand rougher play. Hape toys are designed first and foremost for children with each product developed to enhance a child's developmental skills. Neither language, nor culture, nor gender impedes the intuitive play patterns. What children see as fun, parents and educators recognize as age-appropriate learning basics; social, sensory, physical, and emotional skills. Using natural materials, water-based paints, and strict quality and safety standards make every Hape toy an investment kids will love and parents can trust. NOFO @ the Pig - 2014 Fairview Rd. Magical Memories - Your Favorite Toys
We took to the streets and asked shoppers in the Triangle to tell us which toys they still fondly remember from their childhood. Scroll through below to take a trip down memory lane. Ouija Boards - No sleepover or camping trip was complete without this wonderfully-creepy game, which seriously left us wondering if the spirits were trying to tell us something -- or if our buddies were just trying to pull one over on us. Chatty Cathy Dolls - You guessed it. The term we use to describe an especially eager conversationalist comes from this popular doll which debuted in the late 1950s. Pull a string in Cathy's back and she'd speak one of about a dozen phrases, including, "I love you." Aww! The Mighty Dump Truck and associated "Mighty" line of construction equipment models introduced from 1964. The all-metal "Tonka Trucks" were sold throughout the world and earned a reputation as being indestructible. A mighty all time favorite of the men we asked. Brio Trains - Let's celebrate 130 years of never growing old! Always fun to build and play with. Wooden trains, tracks and accessories sparking young minds since 1884 with a clean and simple design. Brio products encourage and open up a whole universe of fun, where the only limitation is your own imagination. This is a play-philosophy they base all their products on, and it's one that they've stayed true to since the birth of the Brio company.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz.. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.
That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money.
We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz. We look forward to delivering it.
