History in the Making - 3 Day Festival Celebrating The Southern Folklife Collection

So many finds but so little time to celebrate history of southern music and art. Not to worry, The Southern Folklife Collection (SFC) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a three-day Festival featuring music, panel discussions and special concerts on August 21st through 23rd in Chapel Hill.

What is the Southern Folklife Collection? Only one of the nation's foremost and largest archives of Southern vernacular music, art, and culture, available for research at UNC Chapel Hill's Wilson Special Collections Library. The SFC is an educational resource, an archive dedicated to collecting and preserving cultural heritage, and a focal point for the public appreciation of Southern art forms.

Since opening in 1989, the SFC has grown to contain over half a million items including sound recordings, moving images, photographs, manuscripts, books, song folios, serials, posters and ephemera. The Collection is especially rich in materials documenting old-time, country-western, bluegrass, blues, folk, gospel, rock, Cajun and zydeco music. The SFC holds numerous recordings on the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry, including "Puppy Love,"  Dolly Parton's first recording.

Festival events will take place across the campus and at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro including musical performances, lectures and readings, and an in-depth look at the SFC collections. The festivities will culminate with a headline concert by Tift Merritt and Merle Haggard.

Playing with Petra - Petra Meiren Jewelry

Fun-loving Petra Meiren found her calling. Though she's a serious modernist designer, she plays like a kid with materials, shapes, and moving parts in her jewelry. Petra's creates high style with "low" materials. The pure geometry, yummy PVC colors, intriguing mesh, mobile-like necklaces and more make Meiren a must for everyone with an inner child waiting to get out and play while looking like a million Monopoly dollars.

Petra Meiren's jewelry is exuberant, versatile, and current. Over the last twenty years, she has developed a body of work that builds on geometric and natural forms, and units that repeat. Her jewelry is everyday easy to wear and pairs well with casual or more occasional clothing. Petra Meiren jewelry is made in Germany and can be purchased at CT Weekends in  Raleigh's Cameron Village.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
