Soul of the South - Inside Out Porch Wins ReSpace Challenge

The porch was the southern essential to any home. Business was conducted on the porch. Socks were darned, clothing mended, the morning paper and first cup of coffee were enjoyed on the porch. Beans shelled, corn husked and children chastised, praised and taught the true meaning of life, took place on the porch. Ah... The porch...Here's hoping for a comeback trend!

Get inspired! ReSpace's annual competition to raise awareness of reused materials while showcasing creative and successful small space designs is preparing an opening exhibit at Maurer Architecture on First Friday, August 1st at 6:00pm.

ReSpace selected "Porch" as the theme for the 2014 competition because porches are a key element of the southern vernacular. They are central to southern culture and are a primary place where neighbors gather, socialize and become a community.

The challenge was to inspire designs for a small, outdoor community gathering space which exhibits exemplary design using reused materials. They asked for a designed space that would allow Hope House (a non-profit outreach program in Wake Forest, NC) to continue growing by moving some of its programs outside. They hope it will help solve their need for space and increase their connection to the neighborhood.

Please join ReSpace on Friday, August 1st (also First Friday) for this exhibit as you enjoy
drinks and snacks. The grand prize winner's design is being constructed on site by Habitat for Humanity of Wake County for all to admire.

The grand prize team is from Chapel Hill's Szostak Design, Chad Butterworth, Michael Mills, Jose Noya, Nilam Patel, Carrie Strayhorn and John Whitaker will be on hand to talk about their design. Other inspiring plans that are worth celebrating will also be on display.

Maurer Architecture is located above Landmark Tavern & Adam Cave Art Gallery at 119E Hargett St #300 in downtown Raleigh. For any questions, please email respace.info@gmail.com. ReSpace Website.

How Can Ugly Be So Good? Chaco's 25th Anniversary

All signs point to embracing a chunkier way of life this summer and no, we're not talking about waistlines (see the return of the crop top). After years on the rise, ugly shoes have made it to the top of the Summer 2014 fashion charts with bulky sandals, heels and sneakers topping our must-have accessory lists. Blame it on the Birkenstock, but it's official: man sandals are happening and the bigger the better.

On Tuesday, July 29th in the Cameron Village parking lot, The Great Outdoor Provision Co. is celebrating Chaco's 25th Anniversary with the Chaco Footwear "Fit for Adventure" Tour! From 3pm to 7pm you can grab a free Chaco Wrist Wrap, try on new Chaco styles, take photos in the Chaco Photo Booth, and enter to WIN the trip of a lifetime!

Organic Transit, from Durham, will be on hand showing off their ELF bike/vehicle. Big Boss refreshments will be served and Old Habits will be picking & playing.

Custom design your Chaco and adjust that bad boy strap around your big toe and get ready for serious adventuring. Polyester jacquard webbing upper, with toe loop, wraps around the foot and through the midsole for the ultimate customized fit. Adjustable and durable high tensile webbing heel risers and custom injection molded ladder lock for a secure hold with durable LUVSEAT™ polyurethane footbed with slip resistant classic diamond pattern design. Designed for instant adventure!

They may be ugly, but with all that additional support and stability there's nothing stopping you from great outdoor adventures from the mountains to the coast. Your feet will thank you!

It's a good thing ugly is in!

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
