Let-Us Stand - LL Urban Farms

Summertime means crispy, easy, breezy salads for a  soiree backyard barbecue, outdoor picnic or a light supper. Gather your greens from LL Urban Farm's home-grown produce stand found right here in the Triangle.

In early 2012 Jim and Debbie Loy and Glen and Barb Lang began brainstorming the idea of creating a small, urban sustainable farm that would focus on the year-round production of hydroponic lettuce. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Their idea grew and the greenhouse went up on the newly purchased land on Holly Springs Road in Raleigh.

They proved that you can produce bibb lettuce year round in North Carolina. Hydroponic production practices and a greenhouse made it all possible. Thus LL Urban Farms began.

LL Urban is in full swing. Mid-summer is a great time to shop your local farms stands for fresh vegetables and fruits. LL Urban's offers produce that's sustainable, locally grown, organic and fresh.

A Taste of Summer - In addition to their own home-grown vegetables, they also offer numerous local vegetables, fruits, cheese and other farmers market staples, as well as 20 heritage breed chickens and two bee hives from North Carolina farmers.

Fresh Fish Delivered From the NC Coast - LL Urban's supplies fresh fish from the Surf City Crab Seafood market. They go down to the docks and pick up the current bounty from the NC coast so you can get fresh seafood. Fish selections change daily based on what was caught and brought to the docks of Pamlico Sound, Cedar Island, Sneads Ferry, Wanchese, or Beaufort.

Not Far from the Tree - The OAKZ Restaurant in Glenwood South

Family Owned and Operated: You've undoubtedly heard the old saying, "If you shake your family tree, watch for the nuts to fall". Well, to be in the restaurant business, you have to be a little nuts (but also passionate). That describes the father / daughter duo behind The OAKZ, an American Cuisine restaurant which recently opened in Glenwood South (Raleigh).  Ira Freedman (father) and Jaclyn Starritt (daughter) named their new concept restaurant using the initials of the grandchildren (Oakleigh, Annie, Karli, and Zack). It was a catchy twist on Raleigh (the City of Oaks) and a perfect concept to showcase not only Southern cuisine but also regional dishes from across the US. The OAKZ is open for dinner Monday - Saturday and also for lunch Tuesday - Friday. There are daily drink specials and parking is reimbursed for lunch and dinner diners.

Comfort Food with a Flair: The OAKZ serves American Cuisine but it is not your  typical truck stop chili and meatloaf fare. Executive Chef, Jabari Wadlington, has created an exciting MENU that includes a tasty variety of entre choices including Spicy Jambalasta, Alaska Grilled Salmon, Steak & Fritz, Stuffed Peppers, and Chicken & Dumplings. Small plates include their Signature Crab Cake, Ahi Tuna Sliders, Buffalo Chicken Nachos, and The Oakz Mac (and cheese). Their seven varieties of salads provide a medley of green choices and their sandwich options cover the gamete from burgers to wraps to Reubens. Each month the menu will bring regional family classics from your city to their table. This month's menu features New England; next month, The Rockies. Also, stop in on July 12th (7-10pm) for some live music from the Jim McCann Jazz Project.

The OAKZ: Location: 510 Glenwood Avenue (former Hi5 spot), Raleigh; Hours: Mon 4-10pm, Tues-Thurs 11:30am-10pm; Fri 11:30am-11pm; Sat 4pm-12am; Features: Full-service bar, as well as a private wine room and a larger event space that will accommodate up to 125 people. The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
